A column reports sharp winds and continued cold across Iowa. Algona tied the state low at 25 below zero, with Spirit Lake 22 below, Northwood 20 below, Spencer 18 below, and Red Oak 6 below, as winter’s depths set in across numerous towns.
Des Moines reports that at least 26,000 more Iowans are serving now than in World War I. Lieut. Col. O P Bennett announced 140,000 Iowans are in service, split evenly between selective service and enlistments. In World War I, 114,000 Iowans served.
Des Moines Iowa 1942 Christmas seal sale totals rose 18 percent from the previous year with 61 208 reported in the season just closed. Clinton led cities over 10 000 population with 81 percent gain and Cedar Rapids 50 percent. Smaller towns Hubbard Marengo Alden Denison Ida Grove posted double digit increases.
Rev. Walter Lake, WAVES station chaplain in Cedar Falls, recalls gifting a Bible to John Bartek, a survivor of Eddie Rickenbacker’s Pacific raft journey. Bartek kept the Bible aboard the raft and read from it during the perilous days at sea.
Fire believed to start in a furnace destroyed the First Methodist church in Clarion early Sunday with an estimated loss of 35 000 to 40 000. Two pianos and all equipment were lost. Insurance on the building was 16 000. A janitor heating for services discovered the blaze. Firemen could not enter as flames spread quickly. Roof damage occurred to two nearby buildings and the parsonage.
The Leon Beatty post American Legion holds its regular meeting Tuesday to set plans for the county Legion meeting in Washington on January 26 and to discuss the annual membership drive. Meanwhile word comes of two Spanish American War veterans’ deaths connected to Washington men in Company D, 50th Iowa infantry: Arthur Wilcox of Davenport and Marshall N. Adams, formerly of Kalona, with funeral arrangements in Iowa City and Kalona and services by the Legion color guard.
The tire inspection schedule for vehicles with ration A is extended to March 5 1948 with six month intervals and at least ninety days between inspections. Ration B vehicles extend to February 7 with four month intervals and sixty days between inspections. Ration CC vehicles extend to February 28 1948 with three month intervals and forty five days between inspections. After February 28 no local board may issue tire certificates for commercial vehicles without CPA inspection every 60 days or 5000 miles, whichever occurs first.
The 190 mile rail project from Chile to Argentina will feature 30 bridges 20 tunnels and 15 trestles or viaducts according to the department of commerce.
The January storm brings a severe winter cold wave to Iowa with temperatures below zero across the state and no relief expected for 24 hours. Northeast towns face 25 below, Spirit Lake 22 below, Des Moines districts halt as streetcars stall and schools close.
The War Labor Board asked President Roosevelt to intervene in a 20 day coal miners strike in Pennsylvania. The board, after a weekend vote by 10 000 strikers rejecting a prior plea to return to work, planned to present the request at the White House. They warned that if ignored the army may take over the mines.
High winds across a broad area of west Georgia killed at least 12 people and injured more than 100, with widespread communication outages and downed highways. Grave Station suffered heavy damage including a demolished house, school, and church, and 65 injuries were reported there.
An obituary notice notes the death of Howard Ragsy Burnham formerly resident of Washington and connected to Company D, with the event taking place in Los Angeles several months prior.
The six church union evening services opened at Lowlist church on a cold winter night with Rev. Afred Trenerry delivering a sermon on Our Heritage based on Elijah. Services continue six weeks with next Sunday at the Methodist church preached by Rev. R. C. Keagy.

Old fashioned winter gripped the area with zero temperatures and fresh snow. Last night the low hit zero again while Sunday night and Saturday night measured similar lows. By eight this morning it was two above with signs of remaining near zero. Snow nearly two inches fell during the night atop heavy snow from earlier in the winter.
A Goodyear tire found Sunday morning in Brighton’s southwest part is awaiting its owner, who must identify it by the serial number. Sheriff H. M. Putner already holds a second tire discovered ten days earlier along the railway tracks north of the square.

Three men who traveled to Des Moines for induction a week ago will enter active Army service at Camp Dodge this week after delayed physical exams. Morris Laverne Anderson of Washington leaves today, Roscoe Spangler of Washington goes Wednesday, and Clifford Harry Page of Kalona goes Friday January 22.
