West Branch leaders urged Washington county veterans to back a state funded bill to repair the Marshalltown veterans home this year. Commander Johnson noted it is the state’s only facility of its kind and improvements are needed. The meeting included five county posts and auxiliaries with Mrs Bernice Williams and Mrs Vivian Wells among guests.

Truck Leaves Road Injuring Wellman Man
Frank Lillig a 54 year old resident of Wellman was hospitalized in Iowa City after his pickup left Highway 22 three miles east of Wellman between 2 30 and 4 30 am. The sheriff said he apparently dozed off causing the crash which left the truck 65 feet from a field driveway and overturned.

Sabrejet Fighters Run Up Week Victory Over MiG-15s
In Korea US Sabrejets tallied a 15 0 victory over MiG-15s in heavy air action. No Allied fighters were shot down in the first 16 days of 1953, the 5th Air Force said, while about 15 Red jets were knocked out. Capt Vincent Stacy of Crystal Falls Michigan credited for a MIG kill as Sabres battled 10 Red fighters near the Susho reservoir. The air force also pressed a major strike on northwest Korean rail and road bottlenecks serving Chinese supply lines.

Fire on Wead Farm Leaves Washington Family Homeless
A Friday afternoon blaze destroyed a two story house on Mrs. Bessie Wead’s Kalona road farm north of Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Max Cross and their three children escaped as firefighters battled the stubborn fire for hours. The Crosses had no insurance on belongings. the home, insured by Mrs. Wead, had coverage but the insurer’s check was mailed to the owner. Neighbors aided in removing furnishings before the fire consumed the structure located on a farm rented by Harvey Holden. The Cross family is temporarily housed with the Alton Clarks as Rev. Earl Longfellow and Baptist church members seek a new home for them.

The plan would boost annual collections to about 40.9 million dollars from 25.1 million, with tax cuts to resume once primary road work is on schedule. In Chicago Rodney Dee and Roger Lee Brodie marked a second month as separate individuals after a 15 hour operation on Dec 17 severed their joined flesh. Rodney Dee remained in critical condition while Roger Lee stayed in very precarious condition at the University of Illinois Hospital after 31 days of expensive care.

Fourteen Dead In Plane Crash Off Newfoundland Coast
A U S Air Force C 54 transport crashed into the sea off the Newfoundland coast near Harmon Air Base on Friday night killing all 14 servicemen aboard. The crash occurred at 9 07 p m as the plane neared landing after reporting engine trouble one mile from the Harmon runway. Weather and ceiling were reported at 1700 feet with four mile visibility.
