Des Moines taxi driver Des Moines Ray D Hopkins received the first safety merit award button for 1938 after stopping his cab in heavy traffic to aid a blind man across the street as Captain E Timmons of the police department presented the honor.
Red Oak resident Adam Brenning received one year in Fort Madison prison and a $500 fine for driving while intoxicated. After appealing he was released on $3,900 bond, which the bondsman later withdrew claiming Brenning remained intoxicated. He was jailed again and to be sent to prison early this week.
Clinton report notes Mrs Bridget Barry reached her hundredth birthday Sunday at home with her daughter Mrs J Murphy. She resides there with limited visitors due to frail health. Once nearly blind, an operation a decade ago restored sight allowing reading and knitting.
Vandals raided the Farm Bureau oil station in Oskaloosa breaking windows ventilators light globes and switches. They defaced signs smashed a display booth damaged a chimney and oil barrel and compressor while nothing was stolen.
Clifford P. Tufty of Fairfield aged 44 died at West Point after collapsing at Dr. Frank Poepsel's home following a doorbell visit. He was employed by the Federal Land Bank of aha Nebraska. He is survived by his wife and two children.
Bloomfield county notes Miss Rachel Rader and Mrs Jane Giles marked their 93rd birthday born in Pile town Ohio in 1845. An older brother Anthony Rader aged 99 remains in good health and vigor.
Arthur Woods’s home burned for the second time in a year. Deputy State Fire Marshal R B O Malley investigated. Woods confessed to starting the second fire by tossing a cigarette into rags and was sentenced to two years in Fort Madison penitentiary. He had insured belongings and did not own the building.
Iowa City figure Aura C McNamer says his newly invented machine gun fires three times faster than rivals and can fire 38,4000 rounds per minute. Labs testing the gun are satisfied and will buy the patents for a substantial sum, ensuring financial security for life.
Lamont locked inside a box car by ex press agent Joe Barth pounded the walls and shouted as a freight yard switcher moved cars. J F Jeffries a Burlington railroad agent endured the ordeal until release.
One day old Daniel Price, son of Mr and Mrs Tom Price of Tama, was born in the rear seat of an auto driven by Mrs H L rey. Mrs Rur ey, Tama relief director and nurse, accompanied them to the University Hospital at Iowa City with Fred Paxton also present.
In Shanghai a Chinese report says Japanese marines landed at the Canton river mouth near Canton supported by planes and ships. Chinese forces moved to counter the attack and reported gains along the Yangtze near Nanking and Wehu while air strikes hit Japanese concentrations. Tokyo reports all peace talks halted though could resume if Chiang Kai-Shek shifts stance.
Des Moines confirms a $5,000 appropriation from the state fair board to the Iowa 100th anniversary committee. The funds fund early planning for the June 12 celebration and the August 24 to September 2 climax during the state fair week. Secretary A R Corey says the plan centers on marking Iowa territory's 100th anniversary.

Finley of Mt Pleasant plans rebuilding the Jeffrey building once loss is adjusted and fire authorities decide which old walls can be used. Crone grocery moves to a temporary store in the western portion of the damaged building while other tenants seek new quarters and the bowling alley resumes normal operation.
Fort Madison reports John Mercer and Allen Wheaton will be executed next Monday at 7 24 am after choosing religious affiliations. Mercer will join the Quaker faith at West Branch while Wheaton will become Catholic. Both express no hard feelings toward Governor Kraschel who denied clemency. The governor may be away in Washington for a White House dinner.
Twenty five 4th and 5th graders began work on the new Y craft department last Saturday. George Mohr led the session as boys cut out figures for door stops with coping saws and used cigar boxes and orange crates as materials. Next week they will craft items from coffee cans as part of the Grade Y program including physical and religious activities.
Dr John Wesley Potter of Mt Pleasant concluded a week of Palestine lectures at the Methodist church and begins a new evangelistic series at 7 30 each evening this week Pastor Arthur Atack announced Potter will also stay over Sunday to close the preaching mission with continued services, following strong attendance in the first week.
Mr and Mrs Lowell Dodds and Hilma Dodds visited at the parental J A Dodds home in Wellman yesterday.
Glen Eldridge the local Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance representative says his office equipment was insured and lost in the Saturday fire at the Jeffrey building. He notes most of his records could not be insured and were destroyed.
James Daniels of West Chester aged 96, one of the county’s oldest citizens, died at 2:30 am at the county hospital after a long illness. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Washington Methodist church. he belonged to the Methodist church, Odd Fellows, and Rebekahs. Born May 19, 1841 near Hartford Connecticut, he lived in Iowa from 1854, married twice, Edna G. Gash his widow. He had no children and no siblings surviving.
Rev. Harry E. Forsberg of Cleveland Mississippi preaches morning and evening at the local Foursquare church. He will stay a week beginning Tuesday night with daily services including Sunday. Forsberg previously spent years in California before moving to Mississippi.
Through a typographical error the name of Fred L. Stewart as vice president was omitted in the officers list elected at the annual meeting Friday evening. Frank C. Crone was elected executive vice president and Mr Stewart vice president.
The highest point in Iowa is Oheheyedan Mound in Osceola County at 1670 feet above sea level. The lowest point is the Des Moines River mouth at Keokuk, 477 feet.

The House Appropriations Committee approved a 553 million dollar Navy bill for the 1939 fiscal year, the largest supply measure since 1921. The package includes 117.35 million for ship construction and funds for two new battleships, two cruisers, eight destroyers, six submarines, four auxiliaries, and continued work on battleships, carriers, cruisers, and submarines already under way. President Roosevelt’s forthcoming address on a major shipbuilding program is awaited.
Minnie Miksch of Wichita Kansas died at her home last Wednesday. She belonged to a newspaper family with notable members including her father George Reed Jr founder of the Keola Eagle. Her brothers Will Reed founded the Wellman Advance and John Reed is editor of the Wichita Eagle.
Charles Norgan 60 and Mary Druell 21 were injured when their car went into a ditch on primary road No 2 east of Washington. Norgan suffered a broken collar bone and bruises while Druell had a fractured ankle and bruises. both were hospitalized then released. Norgan said a curve was missed while talking to Druell. Druell was en route to Harper to work at the Norgan restaurant.
