The Howell sugar bounty plan backed by the farm bloc was defeated 53 to 22 in the Senate. Supporters included 16 Republicans and several Democrats and a farmer labor member. opposition came from 30 Republicans and 23 Democrats.
The minimum temperature last night was ten degrees below zero, one degree warmer than the prior night. Additional snow fell, replenishing several inches on the ground for the past week or two. Cold and snow persist today, with some wind and blizzard-like conditions.
Charles L. Coffin of Oskaloosa posted bonds of 2000 on a charge of unlawful transportation of intoxicating liquor after a car collision near West Chester that injured Coffin. Henry H. Walters, real name of Dick Walters, arraigned and held at Washington county jail. district court adjourned to January 22 with jury trials set to begin then.
A Power Farm Machine Day is planned at the local Washington International Company store Thursday January 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Free moving picture demonstrations will show power equipment use worldwide. Attending are E Billie manager, Ross division manager Chicago, Zeiders branch manager Davenport, and International Harvester staff in Chicago. A demonstration of several implements may occur if weather allows. A free lunch will be served at noon.
A severe cold wave blankets the region from Banff to northern Texas. The north pole of weather stretches over the Rocky Mountains as temperatures plunge to 61 below in Banff and 38 below in Valier Montana. Arctic winds, snow and blizzards have caused dozens of deaths and numerous injuries from hypothermia and stove-related incidents.
Des Moines Iowa January 17 The federal farm board debated marketing structure plans with livestock co op leaders while the Iowa cooperative livestock shippers association and farm bureau urged delay until subcommittee reports. A committee of 11 to work with the farm board was authorized with one rep from each of five state coop marketing groups and six others.
The National Broadcasting Company will pick up and rebroadcast King George's address at the five power naval parity in London on January 21. The speech from the royal gallery of the House of Lords will be sent by short wave to the United States for rebroadcast if received. Stations will begin two hours early to carry the broadcast. This marks the second time King George's voice reaches American listeners after the Westminster Abbey ceremony.

Des Moines Jan. 17 U P Delegates at the Iowa farm bureau federation convention re-elected officers Charles Hearst Cedar Falls president J H Jones Ainsworth vice president and Mrs Ellsworth Richardson Albia head of women's work. They adopted 28 resolutions with debate over income tax replacement versus added levy. Executive board members were elected under a new redistricting plan plus a women’s committee named. National delegates slated for December include Hearst Myhr and Fred Shaw Corn ing.
Rev I W Eastwood urged thinkers with vision to support the local Y M C A through the Ys Men’s club. Henry Bailey led the program while Leland Morrison provided an intelligence test. Ottumwa’s Men’s club canceled a planned visit due to members’ unavailability.
Everette L Stewart of four miles northeast of Washington Iowa is named a master farmer by Wallace's Farmer Des Moines. He farms 280 acres in Jackson township with 200 owned by his father and 50 his own. Stewart is a large cattle and hog raiser and active in Farm Bureau and United Presbyterian Church. He attended Iowa State College graduating in 1909 and later did extension work. His family includes wife and four daughters.
Washington will meet Burlington tonight as the Demons chase the highest scoring mark in the Little Six while Burlington boasts the league’s strongest defense. Both teams fell to Ottumwa and Mt. Pleasant recently, and Coach Jim Shultz is expected to field Kiesey Westermark Well Ahren Schulty. Washington JC meets Graceland next, after an overtime win over Maquoketa JC. A half million dollar memorial for the Navy, Merchant Marine and Coast Guard was announced for Washington.
The Federal Farm Board plans a spring survey in Maine New Hampshire Vermont Massachusetts Rhode Island Delaware Connecticut New York New Jersey Pennsylvania Maryland and West Virginia. Chairman Legge says the study will map local cooperatives to form sound regional cooperatives with aid from state colleges experiment stations extension workers and state agriculture departments. Work begins by July 1 with general supervision from the board and field staff supported by agricultural colleges.
Mrs Anna Marie Petersen died at 10 45 last night at the home of her daughter Mrs R L Keyser on North Marion Avenue. Cause heart trouble. Funeral services Saturday at St Patrick's Church Clinton with rosary tonight at L A Jones funeral home. Burial in Springdale Clinton. Born in Germany January 23 1873 she came to America at age twelve. Survived by six children including Mrs Carl Noth Davenport and Mrs Francie Keefe Clinton.
A Milwaukee railway special detective seeks information on a relief telegraph operator who left Washington Wednesday night after a shift at the local plat on about an hour. He reportedly boarded a night passenger train and Vanished with about $50 from the money drawer. It is presumed the man and the money left together.
Six freight cars derailed on the Minneapolis and St. Louis line near Oska IO osa Iowa. One car carried matches and caught fire, causing the cars to burn. The derailment cause remains undetermined. Hubert Dufosteau the world's largest horse died after an auto accident in Ames Iowa. He weighed more than 3000 pounds and was treated by Iowa State College veterinarians but died before a sling could support his injured leg.
The body of Fern Smith aged 19 was found in a barn at her home near Moorhead Iowa. A discharged shotgun lay beside her. Police attributed the death to self inflicted gunshot. The discovery was made by her father.
The American delegation to the London naval conference arrived in England with minimal ceremony at Paddington and met Prime Minister MacDonald at Downing Street. Secretary Stimson expressed optimism for a successful conference, while King George was set to receive delegates Monday at Buckingham Palace. Plymouth welcomed the group with formal addresses and strong ties to American history.
