Four young brothers Aaron 4 Richard 3 Donald 2 and Paul 1 died in a Council Bluffs home fire. Neighbor James Flynn and mother Eilene Allen rescued baby William 5 months before flames spread upstairs. Father Richard Allen was jailed earlier for a bad check. Fire officials examine possible causes from a divan start or cigarette with two burned bodies found. Both mother and infant treated for injuries.

The Iowa State Highway Commission approved contracts for Highway 81 south of Wellman at a letting in Ames. Perrin Trucking Co. of Iowa City won the reconstruction bid of $59,685 for grading widening and paving from Second Street in Wellman to the south eighth-tenths mile. Hanson Construction Co. of Washington received $35,466 for concrete pipe culvert extension and a concrete slab bridge on the same highway.

Dr Vernon Elgin led appointment of committees and plans included a YMCA Prayer Breakfast on January 21 led by Rev Carlyle Smith and Mr Robert Gilles. The breakfast costs 50 cents and runs 7 to 8 am. Youth Sunday set for February 2. A Mental Health Association in Washington County was discussed with potential involvement from Mount Pleasant Mental Hospital and Iowa State University.
