Chamber of Commerce officers and Farm Bureau leaders met with Farm Service reps to clarify rumors about a potential expansion into retail stores in Washington. They stated no such changes are planned beyond purchasing another oil truck for Well Mah area and continuing to sell fuels fertilizers and seeds through Farm Service.

Newcomer Glen H. Johnson arrives from Marshalltown to serve as assistant manager at the Montgomery Ward store in Washington. He replaces Bob Weston who moved to the Des Moines Ward. Johnson, single, previously lived in Stanton Iowa and rooms with the Chamberlins at 432 Last Van Buren. He favors Lutheran church.
Wayland funeral services set for 10 30 in Sugar Creek Mennonite church for Mrs A B Blosser who died this morning at Memorial hospital in Mount Pleasant.
AFL stereotypers return to work at four Tri City newspapers after a two week walkout ended with a 10 cent hourly wage raise pending Wage Stabilization Board approval. AFL printers maintain strike across the papers in the second month over teletypesetter tape processing and wax issues.
Wayland funeral services for Mrs Mayme Howard who died at noon Thursday will be held at 2 PM Saturday at the Wayland Methodist church. A note explains pulmonary phthisis as the technical term for tuberculosis.

The Linnemans family of Milwaukee, whose eight children faced a polio outbreak in 1952, donated $500 to the March of Dimes. Four of their eight children died within nine days, described by the Foundation for Infantile Paralysis as the nation’s worst polio tragedy that year.

Mrs. Florence Cook learns her brother Jess Daub of Creston has died at age 64. Born in Washington county he spent his childhood in the area. Funeral services are set for Creston Saturday afternoon.
Mrs. Bernice Williams of Marion Town state president of the American Legion Auxiliary and Mr Williams will dine with Mr and Mrs BE Ward this evening. Mr Johnson state commander of the Legion and Mrs Ward state vice president of the auxiliary will attend the county Legion and auxiliary meeting at city hall at 8 tonight. Paul Hesser of Burlington district Legion commander also will be a guest.
The influenza outbreak forced closures across several Minnesota towns including Kerhoven New Ulm Fairfax Sleepy Eye and left up to 25 percent of children at home. Blizzard weather closed schools in the Sioux City area and about 25 rural Iowa schools also paused classes.

President Truman ordered offshore oil deposits along California Louisiana and Texas coasts turned over to the Navy for national defense. He warned it would be folly to sell and later buy back oil at high prices. Congress called the move meaningless and may override it. Eisenhower could seek to cancel after taking office.

Harold A. Young, superintendent of the Iowa Temperance League, will speak at the union service in the Presbyterian church Sunday at 7 30 p m. He was born in Waterloo and educated in Clarksville Estherville Minnesota and at the University of Minnesota. He has conducted temperance work nationwide since 1938 with church and legislative activity. The public is invited.
Funeral services for Victor P Peiffer 54 will be held Monday morning at 9 in St James Catholic church. The rosary is set for Sunday at 7:30 at Jones funeral home. Peiffer a farmer died Thursday January 15 at 12 15 p m of a heart attack in a car en route to Washington. He was born March 27 1898 in Keota to John and Susan Peiffer. He married Mary R Adam September 12 1918 at Harper. Surviving are wife five children Edwin J Keota Corinne Herrick Webster Herbert J Wellman Marilyn Wikot Washington Patricia Ann at home two brothers Stephen Webster Frank Keota three sisters W A Schulte Harper Paul Redeker Coggan and Lee R Vogel Keota and his mother Susan Peiffer Keota. His father died August 29 1951. Peiffer had lived in Washington eight years previously from Keota.
La Cinda Boulton aged 16 months died at Hershey hospital in Muscatine after being born September 28, 1952. A service by Rev. Lynn J. King is set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Stacy Funeral Home with burial in Columbus City cemetery. Survivors include her parents Ray R. and a list of grandparents and great grandparents from Columbus City Wapello and New London.

He spoke of eight years in office, the burden of leadership, hopes for peace, fears of atomic war, and pledged support to his successor as Mrs. Truman and daughter Margaret stood by him. He concluded with a blessing. A final note observed that one in thirteen people is left handed.
