Three strikes affecting defense work were settled or avoided today. Eaton Manufacturing workers returned to five plants in Saginaw Cleveland Detroit Battle Creek and Marshall after a Monday strike. An electrical strike at Providence R I was called off saving a 15 million defense order. Negotiations continued at Ryan Aeronautical San Diego amid wage demands. An accord to negotiate at International Harvester followed a CIO telegram exchange. In Newcastle Indiana a CIO regional director sought federal labor council help over a Chrysler plant strike involving 3500 workers.

Ames Iowa January 16 Iowa State College highway engineer Prof Ralph A Moyer warns motorists to slow to crawl speeds when driving in fog and ice and to use chains if possible. Tests show stopping distance on ice at 20 mph can reach 169 feet and pedestrians face high risk when streets are glazed.
