A Des Moines column reports that farmers and B and C card holders will face stricter gasoline rations in 1945. OPA official Derrick says supplies must cover military needs, with local boards urged to issue coupons only for minimum needs, reflecting a district wide push after meetings with ration boards and AAA officials.
Mrs. Mary Curtis 44 of Masonville died in a Saturday night accident on Highway 20 one mile west of Manchester. Her children Harold 12 and Ronary 10 were injured. Curtis the driver and another younger son escaped with minor injuries.
Marengo Theodore Ponreman, 64, a former world champion wrestler and Illinois wrestling referee from Chicago, died of a heart attack Sunday during a rabbit hunting visit at the Arthur Pundt farm south of Homestead. He and three companions arrived by train Saturday to hunt. The body will be taken to Chicago.
KEOKUK If driving conditions permit today Sheriff Harry V. D. Mass expects to deliver four youths to Anamosa state reformatory. They are William Whittaker Jr and Norman Steffen sentenced to 10 years each for robbery related to the holdup of Howard Dunn, tavern operator, and Alexander Stennett and Gene Davis sentenced to five years each for larceny connected with entering the Bottger building where slot machines were stored.
War Manpower Commission recommends at least two additional bar racks for male workers and 50 trailers for family units to accommodate Iowa Ordnance Plant employees. The plan follows a meeting at the Town Ordinances plant with National Housing Authority and Army officials. Barracks to be built in IOP area by army and plant. trailers to occupy former Stunnystope Avenue site.
Labor unions formally launched their push against national service and work or fight measures in Washington. Chairman Andrew J. May urged quick passage of a bill to require a 48 hour week in essential war industries, while Louis G. Hines argued wage freezes fuel shortages and claimed national service would unfairly force labor to work for lower pay to boost employer profits.
Congressman Jim Dolliver of the 6th District cast his first House vote to continue the Dies Committee investigating un American activities. A GOP and conservative Democrat coalition approved 207 to 162. Dolliver backed the permanent panel, defying CIO pressure. Town of Carter Lake seeks Federal Works Agency relief after floods and sewers failures. Ben Jensen pushes federal aid. veterans committee may add Dolliver to Ways and Means.
Snow fell yesterday evening and last night with a little more this morning to replenish a melt that occurred last week. The light snowfall continues to cover streets and fields in the region.
Emmett Keller of West Chester aged 33 faced a court hearing in Justice of the Peace court on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated after his truck collided with a parked car on East Main Street Saturday evening. He was released on a $504 bond pending arraignment today as police and Sheriff H. M. Putnam investigated the crash.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rothlisberger of six miles northeast of Washington learned their son, Lt. John Rothlisberger, is safe and on duty. The War Department said he had been back on duty since January 1 after being reported missing in action on November 11. Some crew members are prisoners of war while others were not captured. John was the bombardier with the Army Air Corps based in Italy.
Mr and Mrs Rex Smith received a message that their son Pvt Vaughn V Smith has been reported missing in action since December 20 in Luxembourg. Smith went overseas last June after enlisting in September 1942 and wrote letters December 5 and December 7, with notice from Dunlop acting the adjutant general.

Cox is a prisoner of war in Germany and the letter says presentation will be made by an officer of the Seventh Service Command at Omaha when possible.
London reports that the war’s major battles rage from Lithuania to Yugoslavia amid a vast front. Russians and Germans clash in multiple synchronized offensives with 3,250,000 troops cited by German and Allied sources. Moscow confirms a push across central Poland toward Krakow and Silesia as Berlin warns of a decisive Soviet strike.
In Italy, Pte. Duane C. Horn Cedar Rapids Pvt Sylvester J. Dunn Sioux City Lt John M. Herweg Council Bluffs and Tech Sgt Emil J. Pnovsky Cedar Rapids received Bronze Stars or Meritorious Service in recognition of actions with the Fifth Army. Horn and Dunn faced direct fire while guiding troops. Pnovsky led finance work and trained clerks.
