Hampton Allen Mendelhall, a year old farmer living south of here, was killed Friday afternoon in a tractor accident at the Bradford area farm. The tractor tipped while hauling logs as he climbed to fetch another log, crushing him. His wife and five young children survive.
Lieut. L. KE. Kinnan, 32, native of Marshalltown and former Clinton resident, died in a plane crash. Navy records say his mother Mrs Mae Kinnan of Muscatine was notified. He served as flight aide to an admiral since 1937 after cadet training in Pensacola. Surviving include his wife in Coronado California and a brother Lieut. Robert T. Kinnan in naval service at Greencastle Indiana.
John Finnerty aged 76 died in hospital from skull and brain injuries after exiting a city bus near his home. Authorities cannot determine if he was struck by a hit and run driver or collapsed and fell on the road. He suffered a basal skull fracture and cerebral hemorrhage.
Bernita Randolph, 19, suffered critical burns Friday when gasoline used to clean clothes exploded. Viola Mitchell sustained minor burns as their apartment was extensively damaged. The second floor residence belonged to the late former State Senator H W Spaulding, with the first floor occupied by Professor Norman Goodbrod’s Grinnell College music faculty family.
War reduced the patient population in Iowa state hospitals as lay staff cope with doctor and nurse shortages. The overall drop totals 15, 11, and eight in three facilities, attributed to able bodied patients taking work in their home regions.

A two story Timmins residence near Washington burned to the ground Thursday evening. A roof fire at the W. D. Booth farm was quickly controlled by Bart Booth before the firefighters arrived. The blaze at the Timmins home began on the roof, likely from a chimney spark, with most household goods saved.
