Firemen in Washington served over 1,100 people at the annual Pancake Day in city hall with large crowds at both noon and evening meals. The event set a record for attendance in this city.
Robert G. Baker, once a Senate page and Lyndon Johnson associate, was admitted in handcuffs to Allenwood Prison Farm to serve a one to three year sentence for fraud theft and income tax evasion. Marshals escorted him to the facility amid rain as he surrendered and was designated a minimum security prisoner pending processing before transfer to the honor farm.
The 48 page measure cleared the Senate easily but was cut in House subcommittee removing anti rock festival and unified trial provisions. The bill merges narcotics statutes with penalties by drug seriousness and targets pusher profiteers while stressing treatment. Procedural moves ahead could spark a floor fight, but sponsors tout a progressive approach to the drug problem.
Des Moines United Press International reports Gov Robert D. Ray opened his second term with broad aims aimed at a better Iowa. He stressed economy in government, stricter traffic rules, a modern criminal code, and court reforms while urging environmental and human preservation. He backed abortion law liberalization, 18 year olds voting, and a World’s Food Fair, with plans for a county zoning framework and an Environmental Quality Control Agency.
A basement fire at Westminster Terrace Presbyterian Home in Beaches Kentucky trapped 58 residents and left nine elderly patients dead from smoke inhalation. Deputy Coroner William Anderson revised the death toll from an initial 17, noting many escaped to apartment balconies during fire drills.
U S envoy Bruce urged the Communist side at the 99th session of Indochina talks to release information on American missing in Southeast Asia. He recalled a prior 1980 request for a list of missing, prisoners, or deaths and accused lack of satisfactory response. Residents of Kalona join others along the Hills to Montezuma Rock Island line in opposing the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Co request to abandon service. If approved, Barnes City Keswick Webster South English Wellman Kalona and Riverside would lose freight and potential future business. ICMRS led by Kalona’s Earl Stubbs retained attorney James A Malecki to file a statutory abandonment protest with the ICC before the deadline. Passenger service ceased in 1932 though freight has varied. officials say the line loses money and abandonments could curb new business and harm existing firms.
Four lawsuits totaling 2.1 million dollars accuse Harry Hendley and Sons of faulty scaffold design assembly and testing at an Iowa University site. Widow Barbara Hain seeks 280000 for her husband’s death. Rosemarie Tappan seeks for Oscar Heeren. Franklin Miller claims 500000. Glen Heeren seeks 950000 for injuries.
Washington Community School Board met Wednesday night to raise school lunch prices from 35 to 40 cents per day and 45 cents for single day tickets. They approved a limited girls track program for next spring with a coach and an assistant, and discussed remodeling the study hall into a student lounge with no action yet. The board also changed graduation requirements to allow one math and one science credit, kept total credits unchanged, received gifts from Bill Sitler and the Rudd estate, and planned a January dinner with the North Central Association evaluating team visit to the junior high for accreditation insights.
