Des Moines column notes the federal automobile tax stickers go on sale today. Postmaster Edith Johnson and Police Chief Tom Pettitt advocate placing the seals in the tower right corner of the windshield to deter theft. Des Moines post office will distribute one and a quarter million stickers across 1,132 Iowa offices.
Des Moines announces 1941 total of 99 173 placements by United States employment service across 32 Iowa offices. Private employers account for 89 071 placements while government agencies add the rest. December shows 8 324 placements, a record for the month despite a slight drop from November, driven largely by Iowa ordnance plant assignments in Burlington and Des Moines.
DES MOINES Alaska born Jimmie Reed 26 of Zearing Iowa to be sent to the west coast for Marine training. Reed is the son of a Eskimo Methodist missionary mother and a government mail carrier father born at Kotzebue Alaska and later lived on a Marshall County Iowa farm. He recalls people talking about money but says he prefers peace and will work for the country with proper tools from factory workers.
Arnold Park Camp Okoboji a 274 acre summer recreation center on West Okoboji lake Emersons bay will be offered to government for war use this week. Present capacity 500 men ready for occupation in army or navy staff. expandable to 1500 with new dormitories. Water and sewer system adequate. Walther league camp offer follows last week by D M Stearns at Okoboji offering his 120 acre golf course free for wartime use.
Paul DeWit, once missing Pella contractor found working in Rock Island Illinois, was found innocent of forging Noble Juline's name on a $500 check after a two day jury trial. He did not testify. He remains indicted on a second charge involving two other Pella residents and a smaller check.
Iowa high schools will excuse students from the drivers license written examination after completing a drivers training course. Paul F. Hill of the Iowa Department of Public Safety announced a special Iowa edition of Man and the Motor Car Revised, a nationally approved textbook, is now available to high and preparatory schools.
Price Administrator Leon Henderson announced plans to release between 614000 and 674000 new cars for sale by dealers under a rationing system similar to tires. About 550000 to 600000 cars already frozen will join the program, with 103000 to 140000 of January production set aside for a year as a stockpile. In a separate note, the Office of Production Management moved to halt civilian radio production within months and curb private home construction, trimming output by about 30 percent and limiting metal use in homes.
Des Moines reports from Iowa state selective service headquarters state word received from Brig. Gen. Lewis B. Hersh indicates medical students may complete their training. The notice outlines possible adjustments to training timelines and eligibility for service.
Postmaster M. C. DeLong announces motor vehicle use tax stamps will go on sale at the Washington post office tomorrow, cost 2.09 dollars each, payable in cash. Stamps must be affixed to the vehicle and bought by February first. Buyers receive a card requiring vehicle details to mail to the collector of internal revenue.

The CAA had a pool of about 40,000 private pilots ready to join military air forces after the United States entered the war. Enlistment rates surged after the attack.
The map shows new Japanese offensives across the Dutch East Indies and attacks on U S forces at Pago Pago in American Samoa. It notes shelling of the Pago Pago station, Japanese strikes on Celebes and Tarakan, and broader pushes on the Malay Peninsula and Mindanao.
George Oliver Dunbar died at his home 431 East Madison street at 7 15 Tuesday evening after two years of declining health and bedfast since August. Born April 21 1858 in Clark county Iowa he moved to Washington county later in life. He married Julia Ann Rine March 18 1880 and had nine children. Funeral services Thursday at two o clock at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Dr F W Eastwood. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery.

Polish violinist Michael Wilkomirski, of Russian descent, will give a concert at the high school next Monday as the second number in the Washington Concert league series. He trained with his father in Moscow and later studied with Lucien Capet in Paris before moving to Chicago for solo appearances with major orchestras.
American Red Cross chapters report women respond to a call for 50,000 First Reserve Red Cross nurses to support Army and Navy needs. Miss Mary Beard states the reserve must grow by more than 50,000, with 24,000 in the First Reserve and 34,000 in the Second Reserve to aid civilian and military medical services. Major Julia Flikke and Miss Dauser note Army and Navy shortages as wartime nursing expands.
National Bank of Washington holders elect directors Carlton C. Wilson Fred L. Stewart R. E. Dougherty Frank Crone and George J. Breitenbach to the board with Breitenbach to succeed the late George Gilbert. Officers re elected include Dougherty Crone Stewart Muck Weldin Whitehead and Dempsey. Loan and deposit totals were reported with gains in resources and a $40,000 surplus.
May E. Francis of Waterloo announces Democratic bid for state superintendent of public instruction. She previously held the office from 1923 to 1927 as Iowa’s first woman elected to a state post, after a prior Republican affiliation. Agnes Samuelson now leads the Iowa Teachers' association.
Allied forces strike at Japanese targets in the Dutch East Indies and the Philippines while bracing for further offensives around Singapore and Malaya. Dutch and American air actions target Tarakan and enemy ships as Wavell and Hart arrive in Java. The plan prioritizes slowing the enemy to expect coordinated larger assaults once Allied strength builds.
A major blaze tore through the Texas company refinery and storage plant in Claymont Delaware. Officials reported a number of casualties and rapid spreading endangering nearby facilities. Ambulances transported injured workers and two blasts occurred soon after the fire began at the pier where tankers unload oil.
