Sen. Stuart Symington says warehousemen profits from government surplus grain storage are the highest in 30 years of business. Iowa firms Newhall Grain Co. and Archer Cooperative Elevator reported profit ratios up to 63 percent, or 77 percent against cost, prompting calls to cut storage costs if long term space is guaranteed.

Four in McKeone Family Escape Gas Blast Uninjured
A natural gas explosion at the Leonard McKeone home at 414 West 3rd collapsed the two story house but all four family members including Leonard, his wife Mary, and sons John and Joe escaped unharmed. The fire chief reported basement fire contained by volunteers and investigators from Iowa Southern Utilities are probing the gas origin while parishioners raise funds for the homeless family.

Junction Infant Burned by Hot Coffee at Farm Home
Eight month old Christopher John Jennings of Columbus Junction was seriously burned when he pulled an electric coffee pot cord, spilling hot liquid. He is in fair condition at University Hospital Iowa City with third degree burns over 20 percent of his body. The incident occurred as his mother prepared supper at the family home.
