Gov. Robert D. Blue urged no new or additional taxes, drawing warm reception from most lawmakers. Some tax foes want to restore the old income tax rate, while sponsors push 12 million dollars yearly for school aid and a 638 million road program funded by higher fuel and truck taxes. The governor praised both school aid and road upgrades.
The Most Rev. Ralph Leo Hayes was installed as the fifth Roman Catholic bishop of Davenport at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Co installed by Most Rev. Henry P. Rohiman, the ceremony drew over 350 clergy, including archbishops, eight bishops, and heads of religious orders. Bishop Hayes, 60, formerly rector of the North American College in Rome, celebrated a solemn pontifical mass after the ceremony.
Iowa thaw continues as readings rise above freezing in many areas. Council Bluffs hits 43, Sioux City 42, Des Moines 39, with Lamont Estherville and Spencer near 39 and Burlington at 36. Forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, warmer east and central, cooler in the far west.
WATERLOO Stuart Henry of Cedar Falls was fined $309 and costs by District Judge W T Evans on larceny of a milking machine from the Dairy Cattle Congress grounds here last fall.
Robert L. Good 69 and Archie C. Good 29, Glenwood farmers, died when their truck plunged 30 feet at a curve west of town. Sheriff Robert J. Moore reported the accident on Thursday. Coroner Floyd James ruled the deaths accidental. Robert Good survived by his wife, six sons, and nine daughters. Archie by his wife and two children.
A two story brick building that housed the Julius Nygaard billiard hall and tavern on the first floor was destroyed by fire early Thursday morning. The blaze, thought to have started in the basement furnace, was found by an occupant on the upper floor. Three families resided upstairs and all escaped unharmed. The property is owned by A G Larson.
Officials announce the rationing board will close on January seventeenth. The decision affects department operations and public services during the closure period.
At a regular meeting the Washington board of education accepted the resignations of two teachers. Homer Smothers, high school principal since November 1, will leave February 1 to join the federal veterans administration in Des Moines. Margaret Moller will resign January 19 to teach at a Methodist mission school in Callao Peru. Ruth Stewart Duncan will replace Moller as English and general science teacher at the junior high.
