A column notes Iowa shipped 165 carloads of top selling cattle to Chicago, ranking first among states. Harry E. Gardner of Pottawattamie county tied for second with 11 top selling steer lots, while Dubuque county produced the most top loads nationally with 29 shipments.
Mrs. Hilkea Bode of Butler county turns 102 with an open house at her daughter Mrs. Peter Linburgs in Austinville. Known as Grandma Dade to friends she enjoys good health reads and writes without glasses and is mother to four sons and two daughters. Born in Bunde Ostfriesland Germany she came to the U S at age two. Her late husband Rev C Poole served in Kanawha Ja and Ackley Ja.
Governor Weo A Wilson addressed the Iowa legislature urging no new or additional taxes beyond those needed to win the war. He stated state finances are strong, the government runs smoothly, and budget recommendations for the next biennium cover needs without tax increases. He noted the Iowa state guard should be retained for the duration and the conservation program continued. He will be honored at a dinner and depart for Washington to take his seat in the U S Senate as acting governor B B Hicklenlooper prepares for inauguration.
The bodies of a 6 year old State University of Iowa medical student Randall Chris Hansen of Davenport and a woman Tiarleen de Meuleneave of Brooklyn were identified by Dr. Frank Love Johnson county coroner. Autopsies were completed at the university laboratories Monday night and a verdict was delayed for 24 hours pending toxicology results.
Mason City council passed a resolution urging establishment of a state aeronautics commission to develop a state plan and finance ports and facilities for aeronautical commerce. The move asks the governor and legislature to fund a system to keep pace with other states in aeronautical development.
A coroner stated no inquest would be held into the coasting accident that killed 16 year old Jackie Dale and left 15 year old James Pliley with a fractured skull. The boys died after a collision between their sled and a car on a curve at the foot of a steep hill near Lehigh.
Temperatures plunged to chilly lows last night with a nine degree reading at the minimum. By noon the thermometer showed thirteen degrees above zero as the day remained cold.
Bright on January 12 funeral services were set for Roscoe C Bartlett a retired railway worker found dead at his home from a heart ailment. The service would be at two pm at the Brighton Christian church with Rev R W Fillmore officiating and burial in Hillcrest cemetery. The F A Hoskins Funeral Home handled arrangements. Willis Bartlett brother from Shelton Washington to attend.
Claude W. Tucker was elected president of the Washington Chamber of Commerce for 1943 with Lee Holland as vice president and O. J. Schmitt as secretary and Raymond Anderson as treasurer. Board members include G. E. Mace, Harold Johnson, Vernon Witting, Clarence Logan, Robert Patterson and Walter Bond.
At the Washington State Bank stockholders meeting last night all board members were re elected. Officers re elected include John F Foster chairman Glen N Barclay president and Lee A Holland vice president Bank records show deposits of 2 219 494 48 and total assets and liabilities of 2 395 884 68 for 1942 the largest in bank history.
Charles Brown recalls a 30 year old Elias Helwick estate sale that totaled 8750 dollars and sold in two hours and twenty minutes at public auction. The note contrasts past prices with current livestock auction trends.
Washington January 12 UP The office of price administration froze corn prices at exchange highs and will set ceilings within sixty days. The action, ordered by James F. Byrnes with Claude Wickard's approval, aims to curb rising prices and provoke farm bloc criticism in Congress.
Lee Norris of Ainsworth and Washington county representative for Equitable Life of Iowa was named among the big ten in the Davenport agency for 1942. The Davenport agency ranked second in Iowa and seventh nationally in December, and finished eleventh for the year among Equitable Life’s 61 agencies.
On the Pearl Harbor anniversary 350 Jewish war veterans, their families and friends donated blood at the Red Cross blood donor center.
State patrolman arrested Charles Eugene Simmons of Andalusia Illinois for deserting his family. He was taken from a truck between Davenport and Albia and brought to Davenport to answer the charge. Simmons was picked up after a state police radio broadcast.
An announced schedule shows six Washington churches hosting union evening services from January 17 to February 21. Each Sunday at 7 45 PM a different church will host, with pastors preaching in their own church. The plan aims to display church cooperation during the war emergency.

Plans set for 51 county men leaving for active army service early Friday morning January 15. Inducted at Fort Des Moines after passing physicals they received a furlough home before reporting to the Des Moines center by bus from the Y M C A building to assemble at 1 a m. Families and friends may visit beforehand at the Y M C A, not city hall as in prior departures.
Soviet forces drive from two directions toward Armavir and Boroshilovsk northwest of Georgievsk, closing on the rail hub and oil line. Other columns push to Konstantinovskaya and Salsk, threatening retreating Axis troops. Ge Georgievak rail center disputed. Allied air actions strike Naples and Tunisia as French troops seal off German forces near Pont du Fays.
Fire crews were dispatched this afternoon to 902 West Monroe on the west end of the street. The blaze was in the Campbell residence garage and firemen were still working on it at 2 40 p m. The report stated the fire was inside the building.
Hugh Hall, chairman of a patriotic committee, says plans are in place for coffee and doughnuts for new soldiers at the Y before they leave by bus. The Daughters of the American Revolution will provide the coffee and doughnuts. Departures occur between one and two o'clock at night, so no formal program is planned.
