Des Moines reports January 1 employment in Iowa shows slight December decline of 1.1 percent from November while weekly payrolls rise 1.7 percent and average weekly wages up 2.8 percent. State labor commissioner Frank E. Wenig notes a steady 1934 year end with improved collections and a cautious but encouraging annual start.
The government will begin dredging operations on the two million dollar dam across the Mississippi River near Muscatine. Officials expect the project to employ over 600 workers when fully underway in the spring, according to the Federal Reemployment Office.
John H. Mitchell of Ft. Dodge led nine candidates as Democrats nominate for speaker of the Iowa House in the 46th general assembly opening Monday. A. H. The association reported in force insured risks at $18,765,607 with 191 claims paid in 1934 totaling $31,125.36 and a cash balance of $32,172.26. The two-mill assessment raised $33,130.72 for expenses and losses. The group, organized May 4, 1874, is the state’s largest mutual in a single county.
A total of 167 dollars was taken in at the Y M C A circus hosted by the Y's Men's club with expenses light and profits around 100 dollars. The event drew large Thursday and Friday crowds and featured a New Deal Night Club and a faculty men vs women basketball game with lively action and a police interruption over indecent exposure.

Governor Herring announced a new Iowa state board of health with Dr. Nathaniel M. McKitterick of Burlington Dr. Charles E Irwin of Cedar Rapids Dr. W E B Walsh of Hawk Eye Dr. E M Myers of Boone and Dr. Herbert E Stroy of Osceola. The first three are Democrats and the others Republicans.
Riverside January 12 stockholders of Peoples Trust Savings bank held their annual meeting re electing all directors and officers. The 1934 deposit load rose and the bank reported overall satisfactory condition. Directors: Edward Godlove R H Heitzman Henry Frank George A Eglin William Griffin H E Doud William Olo ughlin. Talks by Captain Pollok Wallace and Captain Jay Brown, reminiscences to follow a 7 p.m. banquet. James E. Linthicum of Hastings Iowa plans to attend. Dr Reed Salladay of Pierre regrets.
Amelia Earhart, aiming to be the first woman to fly solo across the Pacific, reports nearing California from Hawaii after a 2,400 mile all water hop. She radioed she could see the coast but was not yet over Oakland and asked for directions. Earlier the next day she was about 300 miles from the coast with a tail wind aiding progress.
Everything is ready for the big poultry show at city hall on January 16 and 17. Entries are due January 15 at city hall and birds will be removed January 18. Plenty of time remains for entries and a great variety of birds will be displayed.
New Jersey will trace to Bruno Richard Hauptmann a total of 49600 of the 50000 ransom paid by Col. Charles A. Lindbergh for a baby allegedly dead. The trial adjourned over the weekend as defense reviews the prosecution case. Dr. J F Condon identified Hauptmann as the ransom collector, with the inference he took the baby from the nursery.
Township corn-hog committeemen plan a county meeting next Tuesday in the Congress hotel private dining room. The first session starts at nine o'clock and about sixty men are expected.
The Washington county Older Boys and Girls conference will be held Tuesday January 29 at the Methodist church in Washington. Do G Herbrecht state worker will attend and other speakers will be announced later. Willis Wittmer leads the event for the county council of religious education.
