Japan comes alive for local students

Three Japanese visitors spoke at Washington Junior High School for seventh graders learning geography. Toru Yamakawa and Takashi Hatchoi, University of Iowa students, and Hatchoji Obari from the Extension University of Southern California at Berkley shared life and culture. They noted youth dating norms in Japan with men marrying at 25 to 27 and women at 22, and discussed Japanese handwriting currency language and dress before the class.

Skylab rocket reenters Earth amid uncertain landing site

The 42 ton Skylab rocket reportedly fell to Earth before dawn with NASA stating a 30 by 65 degree longitude track across a 50 degree latitude belt. Officials noted no confirmed surface debris and ruled out expected damage. reentry path crossed Atlantic and near Sahara before teams traced the probable burn area.

Blizzard hits much of state

The first winter blizzard raged across western and central Iowa with 60 mph winds and zero visibility. Snow depths reached a foot or more in places, roads and interstates were impassable, and dozens of vehicles were stranded as power outages and closures spread. Several schools buses and lines halted, while rescue teams aided motorists. unusual warm spells earlier in the day contrasted with bitter cold and arctic gusts.

Inauguration Plans Grow as Des Moines Invites Soar

State officials announced 34 000 invitations for Gov Robert D Ray inauguration up from 16 000 two years ago with about 12 000 expected at the inaugural ball. The ceremony begins at 1 p m with the address after swearing in. The Iowa Educational Broadcasting Network will cover the event. Consecration services are set for Wednesday at First Christian Church Des Moines. The Town National Guard handles operations.

Old Creamery to stage two day Washington visit

The Old Creamery Theatre Company from Garrison Iowa comes to Washington January 21 and 22 for free student matinees and two public evenings. Performances include Rimes Mimes and Other Nonsense and She’s Only a Bird in a Gilded Cage with tickets at 2 dollars. The troupe of eight is partly funded by NEA and Iowa Arts Council grants and ticket sales to the adult shows help cover costs.
