Heart transplant pioneer Block dies in New York
Louis Block, 57, retired New York City fire lieutenant and fifth heart transplant recipient, died eight hours after surgery as donor heart proved too small to sustain his organs. Donor Miss Helen Krouch, 29, of East Paterson, New Jersey, died from a brain tumor. Block’s team cited pumping insufficiency and lung decline from long heart disease but praised the effort and ongoing promise of the procedure. In Palo Alto, California, Kasperak, 54, remained critically ill four days after receiving a wife’s heart, with improving circulation but continued ventilation and private visits curtailed by respirator use. Doctors expressed cautious optimism based on heart function.
