Cautionary December Drop in U.S. Jobless Rate Cited

The Labor Department reported a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fall from 5.9 to 5.5 percent in December with 100,000 fewer unemployed at 3.8 million. Adult male unemployment edged up while teen and female unemployment fell. total employment declined 700,000 to 68.6 million, still above the previous year.

Deny Iowa calls federal health plan unnecessary

Iowa Medical Society told the House Ways and Means Committee that President Johnsons plan to finance care for the aged through social security is superfluous for Iowa. The society backs Kerr Mills and opposes King Anderson, noting Iowa already provides ample health care and is expanding programs using federal matching funds. Mr and Mrs Gilbert Mills plan an eight day Spain and Portugal trip funded by a Rambler dealers contest.

Better tax deal for big donors

WASHINGTON UP I reports Senate tax writers approved a plan to liberalize how high income donors are treated for charitable gifts. The Finance Committee, meeting to speed Johnson’s 11.1 billion tax cut bill, agreed to allow individuals to carry forward charitable deductions for up to five years, extending corporate rules. Under current law individuals may deduct up to 30 percent of income.

Titan 2 rocket test firing set for Gemini program

UPI reports a Titan-2 rocket test at Cape Kennedy as a major step for the Gemini program. The 90 foot rocket with 430000 pounds thrust in the first stage will fire for 30 seconds while the second stage ignites, aiming to place a dummy Gemini capsule into orbit in March with at least two more unmanned flights planned before the first manned mission early next year. The Titan-2, powered by toxic propellants, surpasses Atlas rockets used in Mercury. The test is set for about 1 45 p.m. EST.

CIA says Soviet economy faltering needs Western machinery
