Washington County Farm Bureau launches a survey to count rural residents available for full or part time industrial work. President Lawrence Miksch says results will aid families staying near home and may benefit neighboring towns, with emphasis on adapting farm life to nearby industry.
The first of two Cub Scout adult leaders basic training sessions will be held Monday January 13 at 7 30 p m in the Washington VFW hall. The second session is scheduled for Monday January 27. Leaders and parents from the community and surrounding areas are urged to attend. The course will be conducted by Scout officials from Iowa City to acquaint adults with Cub Scouting purposes and activities.
Des Moines reports state records show Iowa spent more than 750000 for new cars and trucks in 1957 excluding purchases for the Iowa Highway Commission and Board of Regents. 453 vehicles were bought through the Executive Council, with Chambers Motor Co leading in sales, followed by Hunter Motor Co and Capital City Motors.
This week's reports note student reactions to oral book reports in junior English with Mr Hervey and freshman reports by Mr Woodruff. Maxine Henness has returned to hospital in Iowa City after earlier pneumonia recovery. In Sibley Iowa the Ernest Jacobs farm couple testified they drove Jack Hoskins to Rock Rapids the day before his wife Carol Hoskins was killed. Hoskins offered five dollars for the ride claiming he wanted to see the baptism of his son. The case links to the disappearance and murder of Mrs Hoskins and the infant Paul who witnessed the scene at the church.
Junior Hi Y ers host a Saturday dance at the Washington YMCA Saturday night at 7 15 p m. Members pay 10 cents while non members pay 35 cents. All junior high age boys and girls are invited. Music by Dean Garrett and his turntable.
A YMCA enrollment training session is planned at the Washington Y building at 7 30 p m today All workers sectional leaders and captains are urged to attend this session the sole meeting before the membership enrollment effort opens this month The session will last about one hour.
Iowa Liquor Control Commission members visited Washington to assess local suitability for a state liquor store. They toured buildings and spoke with residents but offered no decision, noting a 30 day public notice period before any store opening and possible objections. Petitions and objections are on file with the commission.
W. J. Maxheim the American Legion commander told Washington County Legionnaires and auxiliaries that a major fight over veterans benefits is looming in Washington. He said department commanders have been summoned for hearings on possible cuts while calls for more federal funds for Cold War needs grow. Cecil Zollers also spoke, sharing pictures from the national convention.
Lyle J. Moore aged 36 died when a tractor overturned onto him on his farm about two miles west of Columbus Junction. His body was found at 7 pm by brother Burdette Moore. Coroner Victor Stacy said Moore likely died hours earlier. no inquest planned. He leaves a widow Frances Gill and four children, plus siblings and step-relatives. Funeral services set for 1:30 pm Monday at Independent Bible Church with Rev. George V. Neal. Burial in Columbus City Cemetery. body at Stacy Funeral Home.
Kiwanis gathers at St James School as Harris B. Jones of 314 Clara Barton is installed as Lt. Governor for the First Division Iowa Nebraska District. Lee Miller of Cherokee installs Jones. about 150 attendees from multiple towns hear remarks and enjoy a Washington High School chorus and dance to conclude.
OsKaloosa Iowa reports Joe L Gettys president of the Iowa State Education Assn urged educators to boost political activity for more state school aid. He said education is also politics and that legislators must provide adequate support while stressing science math social studies and global understanding.
Nelson A. Rockefeller told the Senate Preparedness subcommittee that the United States is losing its military lead to the Soviet Union but still can regain it. He urged a $3 billion annual defense budget hike and Pentagon reorganization to unify the services, with follow through over six years.
Donald E. McConaughey of Davenport is held in Washington County Jail on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated after a 3:45 am wreck on January 10. His 1952 car was demolished and found upside down in a ditch near the Rex Smith corner on highway 92 four miles east of Washington. He fled from hospital care and was recaptured near the square and jailed.

Mrs. E. C. Smith, 82, of 352 East Washington Street died this afternoon at the local hospital. Jones Funeral Home will handle arrangements. details of final rites not yet available.
Harris B. Jones announces a standard first aid course starting Tuesday in Pleasant Hill with Mrs. B. R. Baumgartner as instructor. Jones says additional classes will resume soon at the chapter office in Washington and invites interested residents to call Olympia 3-438 for details.
Authorities hold without bail James U Harris 67 husband of a 12 year old girl arrested at his bride’s home on the first day of their marriage. The bride’s father Thomas Ellwood 65 was also arrested. Both charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Marriage occurred near Bland Mo with Rev Roy Jett officiating. Welfare officials placed the girl in another home while the mother remains at home to care for three younger children.
S W Kaster longtime officer of Leon Beatty American Legion post in Washington was appointed to the transporta tion committee of the National American Legion. The appointment came in a Thursday letter from John S Gleason Jr national commander and runs through 1958 with recommendation from Iowa department officers and national executive committee approval.
