A Humboldt county district court received a preliminary information charging Doran Machovec, a local high school student and farm boy, with the murder of his stepfather Paul Voss, 41, who was fatally shot in the barn at the farm south of here. Machovec was at large when Sheriff H. J. Sexe arrived as the search continued.
Several thousand gallons of fuel oil spilled when a large semi trailer overturned on Highway 65 69 at the railroad overpass in Huxley. The slick pavement required sanding by highway crews. Driver Howard Clement of Des Moines reported the swivel mechanism on the tractor gave way as he swerved to avoid the bridge rails.
Charles D. Huston 82 longtime Iowa Democrat and former state central committeeman and IRS collector for Iowa died Saturday after a long illness. A native of Ohio he came to Tama county as a youth and led the Tama County Democrat in Toledo before later working for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. He also ran a Cedar Rapids printing business and served four terms as mayor of Cedar Rapids.
A pickup carrying William Flanery and William Flan, both from Guthrie Center, left the highway south of town late Saturday night, struck a telephone pole and a tree. Flanery, 48, owner of the Farmers Elevator, died at the scene. Flan, 59, an elevator employee, died about 2 AM Monday after being found unconscious and exposed.
James Rutherford Rhodes, 61, publisher of the Newton Daily News since 1910, died Sunday morning from a heart attack in McAlester Oklahoma while en route home from vacation. He and Mrs Rhodes were traveling to Iowa after visiting Texas for health reasons.
Two 18 and 16 year old youths, Raynd Earl Simbro and John A. Culp, are to be arraigned on murder charges in the December 22 slaying of station operator William H. Bare at Hing Station. Sheriff Paul Applegate announced the impending filing in Marion County.
Carl Hedges, senior member of the Klein Klothing Kompany, retires and sells his stock to partners Joe Falk and Clarence Logan. The store will continue under their management with no name change. Hedges recovered from a recent heart attack and will rest while pursuing other interests.
Iowa Daily Press Association poll indicates 86 legislators or more than half favor allowing Iowans in the military to vote in this year's general election. One undecided, the group largely supports extending voting rights to troops abroad and at home.
Washington county war finance committee chair G. E. Mace announces a court house meeting at eight Friday evening to organize a county drive for the fourth war loan campaign January 18 to February 16. The goal is 1 million dollars, surpassing last fall.
Gen. Walter Bedell Smith will serve as chief of staff to Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Allied European invasion command. Lieut. Gen. James A. H. Gammell will succeed him in the Mediterranean. Gen. Sir Henry Maitland Wilson becomes supreme allied commander there. Devers becomes deputy commander under Wilson.
Nancy Elizabeth Cunningham Lease 91 died at Washington county hospital after a long life of teaching and home mission work in Tennessee and Arkansas. Funeral at Sherman’s funeral home with Rev. George Kerr officiating, burial at Elm Grove cemetery. Survived by sister Mrs. Anna Forest of Santa Barbara and many nephews.
At noon at the North Second avenue and East Second street intersection a car driven by Warren Stewart collided with a car owned by Ralph Hesseltine and driven by his step daughter. Stewart suffered deep cuts to neck and face and bled heavily. he was taken to the county hospital.
Harvey Meek said it was a mistake that he drove the Farmers' Mutual truck to the Stewart fire near Ainsworth early Saturday. John Custer, the driver on the trip, is credited by Mr. Stewart and neighbors for saving the small tenant house using water from the Mutual truck. The Stewart family plans to move to another farm next month and will relocate immediately.
A men's Brotherhood gathering is announced for Wednesday evening January 12 at 6 30 at the church. The committee promises a fine supper good fellowship and a splendid program inviting all men of the congregation to attend.
The White House announced President Roosevelt will not testify in person to Congress. He will deliver a 30 minute radio address tomorrow night at 8:00 to 8:30 PM Central War Time, with the budget message to be sent to Congress on Thursday. Physician Rear Admiral Ross T. McIntire advised avoiding in person appearance to prevent a recurrence of the flu while noting the president is now nearly recovered.
Ward P. Foss 58 died Sunday at Pine Knoll Sanitarium Davenport after a three year illness. Funeral at Sherman’s today two o’clock with Rev. Ivan Riess. burial Elm Grove cemetery. Survived by six children five in service including William at Camp Carson Robert at Fort Knox Richard in Iran Floyd at Fort Leonard Wood Mary Jane in WAVES Delores at home. two brothers L A Foss Washington J F E Foss Bell Calif. two sisters Della Bettendorf Davenport Edna Russell Calveston Texas. Foss born Warren Sept 7 1885 moved to Washington 1890. worked as an interior decorator. He moved to Davenport years ago.
A lawsuit filed in district court stems from a country road crash south of Grace Hill between a Brighton creamery gatherer truck driven by Loren McNeese and a Keota creamery truck owned by Erwin Hoberman and driven by Floyd Geil. The Brighton firm alleges the Keota vehicle was on the wrong side of the road and negligent, causing damage to its truck and cargo.
Allied and Soviet forces push deeper into German lines on multiple fronts. Vatutin's Ukrainian armies advance toward Sarny and near the Polish border, threatening a juncture with Konev's forces to open a route toward Romania. American troops storm strategic mountains near Cervaro encircling Cassino as they press to weaken defenses along the Italian front.
U S bombers from the 15th Air Force based in Italy struck Sofia today in a coordinated action announced with word the 15th had shifted from Africa to bases in Italy. The operation aimed to deal a strong blow to Bulgaria and to undermine German satellites in the Balkans.
Mrs JL C Willits is expected home Wednesday night from San Antonio Texas. Mr and Mrs Willits went there to spend Christmas with their son in law and daughter Major and Mrs E L Keith and granddaughter Julie. Mrs Willits remained for a longer visit and became ill with flu.
The petition cites an alleged loss of 300 dollars for two weeks without use of a truck, plus 75 dollars to rent a substitute, totaling 375 dollars sought by the Brighton company. Attorney L. J. Kehoe of Washington represents the plaintiff, with Grimm, Elliot, Shuttleworth & Ingersoll of Cedar Rapids assisting.
