Soviet to Free Belgians Plane Held Near Caspian Sea
The Soviet Foreign Ministry agreed to release the Belgian Sabena Caravelle with 27 aboard after interception near the Soviet Turkish Iranian frontiers. The aircraft, en route Tehran to Brussels with stops in Istanbul Athens and Frankfurt, and its passengers were moved to a site near Broznyi. The passengers include Americans Charles and Maria Weimer of New York and Fred Holden. The plane had radio compass issues and wandered into Soviet airspace. The interception occurred near Yerevan and the Caspian region.

Ten Below Here Grade school and high school age youngsters received an unexpected vacation as freezing cold and drifting snows closed nearly every school in the area. Many districts released students early Monday and canceled classes today while rural roads remained drifted and impassable. The St James Catholic School in Washington stayed open with 35 or 40 of about 200 students absent. County crews worked from Sunday through today to clear drifts as officials noted partial improvement but continued hazards on rural routes. One Man Dies In Iowa Derailment Near Aurelia
Illinois Central passenger train derailed two miles east of Aurelia Iowa during a blizzard. Expressman John Nelson died from injuries after being cut from the wreckage. Engineer Darrell Johnston trapped in his cab and hospitalized in Storm Lake in critical condition. At least six passengers injured, with some reports up to ten. Passengers moved by bus to Cherokee and later by taxi to Sioux City. No immediate cause. a broken rail is suspected. The Chicago to Sioux City Hawkeye service was about 40 mph and late by half an hour.
