Centerville banker Wilson K. Ervin urged Washington Iowa civic groups to rally leadership and data driven economic development. He warned competition for industry is fierce, urged planning and broad local cooperation, and highlighted county redevelopment efforts, a new junior college building, and airport improvements as benefits.
At a YMCA meeting in Washington County Mr Ervin urged unity and enthusiasm for total county development. The Rural Areas Development program through USDA sets a Technical Action Panel including Soil Conservation Work Unit Conservationist, ASCS Office Manager, and County Extension Director to aid local planning groups with data gathering. The panel met to offer assistance in studying and organizing development programs for the county.
President Johnson unveils a 97.9 billion dollar fiscal 1965 budget with a 500 million cut from Kennedy's plan and a 25 percent cut in uranium output by Russia. He urges congress to approve an 11 billion dollar tax cut, expands civil rights and health programs, and outlines a 10 point foreign policy and a moon expedition. He vows to wage a determined war on poverty and to improve education and employment without sacrificing military strength.
Five people including Ankeny police officer Verne Haubert and a Sioux Falls mother and son were killed when a police car skidded on a snow slick U S 69 near Des Moines. The patrol car and the other vehicle were demolished in the collision.
Washington firemen will hold their annual pancake and sausage lunch and dinner for the public on January 15 in the Legion room at city hall. Tickets are one dollar for adults and fifty cents for children. Proceeds benefit the Washington Firemen's Fund and about 1,000 people were served last year.
Fire chief Tom Tanner reports two minor blazes Tuesday. A shed at 1324 North Marion on Charles Gault property caught fire from bonfire sparks, causing slight damage. A stove fire at 1920 East Jefferson home was quickly extinguished, with damage limited to two T bone steaks.
The Mahaska County unit of the National Farmers Organization will host another Whole Hog sausage feed at the Eagles Hall in Oskaloosa on Tuesday evening January 14. Serving runs 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Ralph H. Vogel, assistant to Iowa agriculture secretary L. Liddy, will be the featured speaker and discuss meat imports.
The government radio in Havana announced a $12 million plus sale to Cuba of 400 city buses and spare parts with more than $1 million in parts, plus 50 interurban buses. Leyland Motors to train Cuban mechanics and establish offices and repair shops. Payment over five years. US officials criticized the deal as harming efforts to isolate the Soviet bloc.
Town Southern Utilities held its annual appreciation dinner for appliance dealers in the northeast district Tuesday at the Legion Hall. Six dealers joined the Ace High Club for outstanding merchandising. members include Jarvis Appliance Kneen Refrigeration Mangold TV and Appliance Montgomery Ward Nortons Plumbing and Heating all in Washington and Seibel Hardware of Sigourney.

Funeral services are set for Henry Jacob Simmering 68 who died Tuesday at Phillips Hospital Macomb Illinois. A graveside service will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. He was born December 20 1895 in Logan County Illinois and married Cecile Shockey on July 17 1895. He is survived by his wife two sons a daughter four brothers two sisters and five grandchildren.
The Washington County Extension Board elected officers and named new board members. William Norman was chosen chairman with Marion Timmins as vice chairman, Donald Hahn as secretary, and Keith Hank as treasurer. New directors include William Spenner, Cel tus Reed, T. P. Graber Jr., and Gary Windus.
Mary D. Woodward 37 of Muscatine, county attorney, announces candidacy for the Republican nomination for attorney general. He will oppose Solicitor Wilbur Bump in the June GOP primary, noting the need to strengthen law enforcement and extend cooperation with local police while respecting local self government. Democratic candidates have not yet announced.
A fire heavily damaged the Eimen reg store in Wellman Monday night with estimated losses around 820000. Firemen from Kalona and Wellman contained the blaze discovered by a passerby at about 7 p.m., with the rear merchandise area most affected and the cause not yet determined.
Jerry Fisher and his wife Jeanette of 921 West Madison reported a half grown coon as an unexpected guest Tuesday evening. The friendly wildlife stayed in the Fisher garage after scratching at the door and was tame enough to be fed before the owner or finder could claim it.
