The Soviet Union released John H. Noble of Detroit Michigan and Pvt. William T. Marchuk of Brackenridge Pennsylvania after more than five years in captivity. Noble was arrested in July 1945 and Marchuk in February 1949. A third American, William A. Verdine of Starks Louisiana, remained in custody.
Charles A Noble 62 says he is grateful as his son John H Noble 28, and Pvt. William T. Marchuk 38 of Brackenridge Pa, are freed after more than five years in Soviet captivity. Noble was arrested in Dresden in 1945 and sent to a Soviet prison camp. his son awaits reunion on the first plane home.
William Brown, 45, of Aurora, was beaten and robbed Thursday night. Charles Van Brockin, 24, Elgin, Iowa, was fined 100 dollars or 30 days for assault. Leonard Teepe, 28, Stanley, released. Robbery charges dropped due to no money found. Brown injured but not seriously. Brocklin jailed after failing to pay fine.
A 60 year old Lincoln woman hid for 53 days in an 18 inch space between a nursing home basement and floor to avoid transfer to Hastings mental hospital. She survived on peanut butter raisins mustard and salad dressing weighing 80 pounds.
The Week of Prayer closes Sunday at 7 30 p m in Presbyterian Church under the Washington Ministerial Association. Rev William Grossheim presides and Rev Halsey Wakelin preaches Walking and Working With God. Churches will present offerings for the Christian Rural Overseas Program CROP to aid Church World Service in Korea and other devastated areas. For every 1 given 20 worth of food will be distributed.
Washington sources report a presidential highway commission led by Gen. Lucius D. Clay endorses more than doubling federal highway spending over the next decade to 101 billion dollars. The plan aims to accelerate the 37,600 mile interstate system and urban traffic coverage, with a portion to be federal funded. The president will outline details to Congress on January 27.
Robert J. Bauge of Shenandoah urged emphasis on the plant Iowa program in the state to help towns appeal to visitors and boost spending. He noted farmers adopted tree and shrub planting more readily than towns, and Shenandoah planned 250 trees and 250 flowering shrubs across three parks and the Country Club grounds with civic groups to explain the program.
Mrs Stanley J Mouser returned from Los Angeles after attending the death of her sister's husband David R Kinnimont who died after brain surgery on December 26. The native of Scotland was 25 years a Los Angeles resident and a machinist inspector. He was a Mason and CES member. Survivors include Frances his wife David Jr a sister Janet Strame and brothers George Vancouver Canada and William Los Angeles. Burial was at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
Four Lee brothers aged 3 23 months 4 perished from burns after a fire trapped them in a locked Chicago apartment. Firemen forced entry to rescue thirty tenants from seven other units. Mother Dolores Lee 30 was not home and was too hysterical to be questioned. The blaze started in a clothes closet and the boys died within ninety minutes at Provident and St Bernard's hospitals.
A head on crash on U S Highways 70 and 80 near Lordsburg New Mexico killed seven people including two children. The Minnesota and Ohio registered cars collided on a curve as one vehicle crossed the center line. Victims include Elwood H Vincent and his wife Amy from Fairmont Minnesota and Ralph Osborn Mitchell 22 Adena Ohio plus four passengers Richard Laverne Hursh and his wife both 25 Silver Springs Maryland and their two young children. An unnamed victim died later in Lordsburg hospital.
Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard was granted permission to attend his mother Edith Sheppard's funeral, both at the funeral home and graveside, by Judge Harry A. Hanna. Sheriff Joseph Sweeney accepted precautionary measures to ensure safe transport and return, with the prisoner under close watch at County Jail.
An eight state alert covers ex convict Mearle R. Hardy 32 and two children Kenneth Pierce 15 and Sandra Lee Pierce 10 as missing from Lancaster Pennsylvania after Hardy allegedly convinced the youths to drive west after school. Hardy, who had borrowed a car and lied about family ties, has burglary larceny and parole violations on record and was last employed as a meat cutter.
Funeral services for Charles C. Plowman 85 retired Louisa county farmer found dead in the basement of his Letts home will be held at 2 p m Sunday at the Letts Evangelical United Brethren church. Burial will be in the Letts cemetery. The Fairbanks home for funerals Muscatine is in charge.
Britain formally accuses the Communist Indochinese government under Ho Chi Minh of flouting the Geneva armistice commission authority. The Foreign Office handed a note to the Soviet government in Moscow saying Viet Minh seeks to ignore provisions of the cessation of hostilities in Viet Nam. Britain, former Geneva conference co chair, will not relay Viet Minh complaints against South Vietnam France or the United States. The note states the international commission is responsible for supervising proper execution of the agreement.
Britain’s Sir Pierson Dixon told the University of Chicago that in United Nations propaganda battles the Soviet Union and its associates always come off worse. He said the UN is a benefit to the free world and that criticisms of the UN as a liability are unfounded.
The Agriculture Department broadened its corn price support to cover low grade No 5 ear corn caused by heavy ear worm damage last year. Eligible corn will receive price supports with discounts based on kernel damage, and state committees will decide applicability in their areas.
Washingtons fourth annual community adult education program begins Monday evening January 17 and runs ten weeks through March 2. Registration options include in person January 12 at the high school or by mail, with fees of 3 dollars for one hour and 5 dollars for two hours. Courses listed include Arts and Crafts, Clothing, Typing, Farm Shop, Conversational Spanish, Practical Speech, Atomic Energy, and Weight Control led by local instructors.
Madison attorney says the Joe Must Go Club will seek to reverse its 21 count conviction for violating Wisconsin election laws within four or five days. The club faces a $4,200 fine for alleged corporate contributions to political causes and may request a rehearing or appeal to the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Des Moines police investigated the slaying of Leo Brafford 41 found burned in a car behind the Electric Equipment Co. An autopsy showed he was murdered with an ice pick strike or head injury. Upper body severely burned. cause of death not yet determined.
Des Moines reports State Sen De Vere Watson aged 61 was elected president pro tem of the Iowa Senate at a Republican caucus. Sen Duane E Dewel of Algona was chosen as floor leader with only two candidates running. Democrats face a sparsity of support in the upcoming 1955 General Assembly. Watson is a veteran lawyer from Council Bluffs, born in 1893 in Scarsboro and first serving in 1941.
Police Chief Ray Stalder announced Johnny Carl Burton, 31, a deaf mute, held in Des Moines after burglaries in six Iowa towns and in Arizona. He confessed to break ins including Washington October 22 involving Lincoln and Stewart schools and an unsuccessful safe opening at the high school. Burton was arrested hiding in Easttown theater and identified in connection with a State theater incident.
The Washington Fire Department answered two calls on Friday. At 3 15 p m a clothes closet fire at 420 South 7th Street caused extensive smoke and water damage and an estimated 1500 dollars in damage. A drop cord light in the closet may have started the blaze. At 5 30 p m an overheated stove at 1108 East Main caused a heater to become red hot but damage stayed to scorched woodwork.
Weather by United Press Iowa reports considerable cloudiness with a chance of light snow flurries in the far north and rain or snow in the extreme east. Colder air follows tonight. Sunday will be mostly cloudy and colder with lows 15 to 20 in the far north and 20 to 30 in the south. Highs Sunday in the 20s to 30s, then Monday remains cloudy and colder with possible light rain, mainly in the south and weaker toward the north.
