Aerial searchers, aided by clearing skies, sought a missing C-46 with 41 on board after a Wednesday crash near the Utah Idaho Wyoming border. Ground teams faced deep snow and failed attempts. a mounted posse would be used if the plane is spotted from the air.
County Rural Young Peoples officers met in Fairfield for a district officer training class. Attendees from Washington county were LakElla Sojka Charles Twinam Shirley Petratz and Gerald Howell with Jim Elliott assisting at the extension office. Betty Strohman Ramona Miller Gerald Neillson and Wayne Cline joined the recreation session. A second training session will be held in Fairfield February 4.
Belgrade Yugoslavia seven of the country’s top Catholic prelates met with Marshal Tito to say no accord can be negotiated or signed without Vatican approval. They rejected a localized deal but agreed to name delegates to a joint commission to study church state relations further.
A deadlock described as hopeless by a mediation board weakens chances for settlement of a week-old strike by 8,200 New York City bus drivers. The board abandoned efforts after a member resigned in protest, citing political use of the strike. Michael J. Quill planned a drivers meeting to explain the situation as 3.5 million daily riders faced travel disruption.
Members of the VEW post will meet Tuesday evening at the post air. All members are urged to attend.
Rescue teams searched a 14 foot crater in a mud field for seven missing crew and passengers after a Flying Tiger C 54 crashed near Issaquah Washington in a driving storm. The plane clipped Squax Mountain then fell on Vincent Herlehy farm south of town burning fiercely as flames lit the night.
Senate civil rights champions pledged to press on after a 70 to 21 vote blocked their bid to change Senate rules to curb filibusters. Leader Herbert Lehman said they would win in time. Southern Democrats and Republicans outlined scrutiny of new civil rights proposals and other measures including anti poll tax and anti lynching bills.
Michael Hagopian opens a four part Community Forum series at Washington high school tonight at 8 oclock. He travels widely in the Middle East and is a noted photographer. A colored film Desert Destiny will be shown as part of his lecture. Tickets at the door. Admission 50 cents per program or 1 dollar for all four.
Fog and freezing drizzle coated highways from Indiana to Illinois slowing travel. Ice snapped an overhead power cable in Chicago and iced runways at Midway Airport while AFL bus drivers struck in western suburbs. Separately a doctor and a 19 year old rescued girls from an icy pond in Boston.
Freezing rain slicked midwestern streets turning sidewalks and highways treacherous for travelers. Authorities urged caution as accidents and slide hazards increased, with closures reported on several routes and aid dispatched to responders.
Wetter Des Moines Iowa reports cloudy conditions tonight with occasional light freezing drizzle mainly in the northeast. Friday brings partly cloudy skies and a slow warming with lows around 15 to 20 in the northwest and 20 to 25 in the southeast and highs in the low 30s. Snow is expected Saturday with colder conditions.
The young adult group hosts another Friday night dance at the VFW hall with Stalder's orchestra providing the music.
New York reports the death of Cor nelius Vanderbilt, aged 82, known as the Grand Old Lady of New York Newport society. She died of bronchial pneumonia at her 1048 Fifth Avenue home, surrounded by mementos of a gilded social era, with daughter Mrs Robert Livingstone Stevens beside her.
Gov. William S. Beardsley designated January 11 to 17 as National Printing Week in Iowa and urged residents to honor the art of printing across the state.
In Karachi six people were killed and 46 injured as troops and police battled rioting students over fee reductions and education reforms. The riot saw shots fired among stone and torch attacks with the South Punjab Regiment deployed. Interior Minister Musthaq Gur Iwani narrowly escaped danger as his car was overturned and burned.
David Zablodowsky fifty, director of the Publishing Division for UN Documents, resigns at his own request amid Senate loyalty hearings. He follows David Weintraub, director of the Division of Economic Stability and Development, who also quit a day earlier as McCarran introduces a bill to bar Americans of questionable loyalty from UN employment.
Des Moines report says crop damage and collisions with deer are a serious problem in Iowa. The state conservation commission notes 475 deer killed on highways in 1951 and 1952 and estimates the deer population at 11 000. The Town Conservationist issue this month focuses entirely on Iowa’s deer herd. About 50 000 Indian Head pennies remain outstanding.
Maj. James Jabara, the world first jet ace, at Travis Air Force Base, desires another combat tour against Communist MIGs. He says it is his duty and expects to fly over MIG Alley again within 10 days or two weeks.
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrived in Washington to bid farewell to President Truman. He landed at National Airport aboard the Independence piloted from New York, in rain, with son-in-law Christopher Soames. Secretary Dean Acheson and Av erell Harriman greet him, along with Sir Roger Makins.
Premier Rene Mayer completed a new right of center cabinet led by himself. Georges Bidault will replace Robert Schuman as foreign minister in a government that aims to pursue European unity. The cabinet list was presented to President Vincent Auriol and will seek National Assembly approval next Wednesday.
The Illinois Parole Board will hear a request to free Nathan Leopold, the killer of a 14 year old, who helped Richard Loeb commit a “perfect crime.” The hearing at Stateville Prison’s chapel draws many observers, with a decision not expected until late January.
A report notes that the typical initial edition of a book contains about 150 typographical mistakes. The finding highlights printing quality concerns and the prevalence of editing oversights.
State motor vehicle director J. I. Carlson says a steel shortage delays 1953 plates, with counties starting W delayed until late January or early February. Washington county treasurer W. Ke. In Belvidere Illinois a family of five was found dead in their rural home from coal gas fumes. Deputy Coroner A L Schrieber said the family had been dead at least five days with an inquest set for today.
Muriel Collier, the Washington county home economist, will resign effective Saturday January 10. She has held the post since August 1951. The resignation was announced by Harvey Holden, president of the county Farm Bureau, and Floyd Andre, dean of agriculture at Iowa State College.
Allied raiders struck a sector southeast of Panmunjom with a 60 man platoon backed by air support. The battle raged for about an hour leaving at least 35 Chinese dead and 10 or more wounded while bunkers caves and trenches were blasted with bombs napalm and explosives.
In Des Moines a coroner's jury is to return a verdict tonight in the fatal shooting of police officer Kenneth Lutz, 32. Key witness Patricia Newman 40 a police operator testified she believes Lutz shot himself after a lengthy secret inquest that began Wednesday and included many witnesses.
A fog bound crash near Grundy Center involved a school bus two trucks and a car injuring three adults while 23 pupils escaped harm. Injured were Harmon Ostendorf Henry Tjepkes and George Seeman. The bus and car were struck by a semi trailer driven by Leo Brannan.
Five members were named to the Community Chest nominating committee at a Wednesday board meeting. Reports on the campaign and Chest finances were heard. Plans were made for February’s annual meeting with election of board members. Edna McCarty chairs. others are Paul Shearer Dave Elder Mrs. Dave McGaffey and Raymond Glasgow. Campaign chair Keith Vetter reported total pledges of 24 533 86 with about 1000 unpaid for 1952.
In Chicago two Siamese twins Rodney Dee and Roger Lee Brodie aged 15 months remained in serious condition after separation last month. Roger Lee was in a coma and judged more critical than his twin, with both brothers joined at the top of their heads.
