Report from Berlin states General Harris ordered lowering of the American flag from a position over a hotel amid a color dispute. Local officials confirm the flag was taken down under instruction and no injuries were reported.
Berlin erupts into civil war with Spartacans storming the chancellor’s palace and clashing in Wilhelmstrasse. Karl Liebknecht mobilizes troops while Rosa Luxemburg and Bolshevik allies aid the revolt as central Berlin is reportedly occupied and banks barricaded.
Government sympathizers fill Wilhelmstrasse to block Spartacan marchers from Parliament area. Hundreds of Spartacan civilians carry rifles while clashes occur at Unter den Linden corner. Spartacan soldiers stand ready outside Hotel Action as violence seems imminent. Observers fear bloodshed unless miracles prevent it.
Washington January 8 The House Interstate Commerce Committee heard from William B Colver FTC chair about a nearly hundred item list from meat packers catalogs. Items span beyond meat processing into coal zinc building materials railroad equipment and ordnance parts.
Oyster Bay reports over 500 telegrams and cables of condolence to Edith Roosevelt and family after the death of her husband. President Wilson and Queen Alexandra send heartfelt pity while King George and former President Taft express deep regrets and respect. Messages arrive at Sagamore Hill throughout the day from citizens officials and dignitaries.
Major George B. Ford estimates the French postwar damage at about 13 billion dollars with 500000 damaged buildings and 250000 destroyed. Belgium faces around 3 billion in losses. Nord railroad loses bridges and stations as 1200 churches and 1000 plants are obliterated.
Reported casualty totals for American expeditionary forces in northern Russia through January 4 show 6 officers and 126 men dead or missing across action disease accident and drowning. British troops in Russia remain limited with some to be withdrawn and bolshevik advances reported around old Russia. Admiral Sinclair notes Bolshevik uprisings near Riga as allies withdraw from Copenhagen.
In Pittsburgh on January 8 an explosion at 804 Penn avenue film exchange building caused 15 to 20 deaths and many injuries. Firefighters pulled trapped women from upper floors as others leaped or were blown from windows amid flames and smoke.
A ladder collapse during a fire injures and saves several, nine girls rescued from a burning building as a man is saved from a seventh floor window ledge. One woman, Rose Ruprabkin, dies after smoke fills the room. Property loss pegged at 1,000,000. In Pinole California four men die from a dynamite gelatine explosion at a Hercules Powder plant, with damage around 10,000.
The Ohio senate voted 20 to 12 to adopt the joint resolution ratifying the national prohibition amendment. The measure proceeds to the house with expectations of a rules suspension to act immediately. Indemnity figure noted: 40 trillion dollars by the central powers.
Paris reports the death of Theodore Roosevelt shocks officials and the public alike. Leaders including President Poincare and Ambassador Jusserand express deep sorrow and praise Roosevelt for liberty and courage as tributes pour in from Europe and the United States.

Special to Kventee Journal reports from London that by three o clock this afternoon no details on Berlin conditions were obtained but fighting persists. Authorities under Ebert appear to control the situation provisionally, with the government seeming to hold masters of the scene.
President Wilson ordered flags at half mast for Theodore Roosevelt and issued a Paris proclamation. Secretary Lansing and Mrs House shire voiced deep sorrow, calling Roosevelt a great American whose vigor shaped public life. London papers praised his lifelong support of the Allies and sea power.
