Sabatino de Benedetto was arrested by Passaic police after they spotted him walking with a bottle of whiskey. He claimed the whiskey came from a New Year party and 80 pennies in his pocket were from an arcade when a robbery report cited the theft of whiskey and coins.
The United States seeks 725000 dollars from Russia for a Navy patrol bomber shot down last June over the Bering Sea. affidavits from the crew and wreckage photos support the claim. Dulles calls the attack unprovoked and says the plane was outside Soviet territory. Seven of eleven crew injured but none killed. The loss totals 1449895.36, with a prior offer to pay half accepted.
Cecil May Conrad DeHarper, 61, died Friday evening at her Crawfordsville home after a long illness. Funeral services are set for Monday at 2 p.m. at the Crawfordsville Methodist Church, with burial in Crawfordsville Cemetery. She married Lloyd DeHarper in 1927 and had lived in Crawfordsville 28 years. She leaves her husband, her mother Mrs. Peter S. Conrad, two brothers Dewey and Oral Conrad, and a niece Beverly Hulme.
Five families were left homeless and three East Moline firefighters were injured in a late Friday blaze that tore through a two story frame apartment building. The fire caused an estimated 25 000 to 30 000 dollars in damage and destroyed all occupant belongings. Firemen Pete Dokas Chief George Laurette and Earl Gritt suffered injuries but were released from the hospital. The blaze was controlled after several hours with no belongings saved.
