UN forces claim to have shot down seven Russian jets and damaged three more over two days, outnumbering the opposition with UA Sabrejet fighters. Ground fighting on a western front mountain halted a To? Chinese Reds had captured days earlier, with Allied infantry fatigued in cold conditions. A weekly loss report was issued for Allied aircraft, detailing yesterday’s aerial battle losses.
Henry Hildebrand of Wayland died today at Henry County Hospital after illness. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2 PM at Germanville Hope Lutheran Church, with burial in Germanville Cemetery. He was born July 24, 1871 near Merrimac to Michel and Mary Ann Knerr Hildebrand. He is survived by three brothers and one sister at home. bearers include Roy Bschlman, Andy Ahnman, Merle Dekel, Edward Taglauer, Dale Craft, and Kenneth Anderson.
Mrs Charities Davisson placed a $2 envelope on her front door for the insurance collector. She went to town and returned to find the envelope empty, noting a thief beat the collector to the money.
Weather forecast for Des Moines Iowa shows high cloudiness and warmer conditions this afternoon with highs 30 to 40. Tonight remains mostly cloudy and mild with overnight lows 18 to 28 depending on location. Tuesday brings more cloudiness and warmer highs 38 to 46. The outlook calls for Wednesday showers, turning colder in western and central areas.
John Ganon announced the appointment of new members to the county extension development committee. Mrs. Earl Booth of Washington and Milton Ross of Keota join the group to review and adjust the extension program. meeting is Thursday night with a district session in Fairfield in January.
Tickets for the annual Community Forum Series are on sale by sponsoring organizations. They may be bought at the YMCA desk or at the door Thursday evening January 10 when the first speaker appears. Kenry Hart, world traveler and author, will discuss Backgrounds for Understanding India's Problems.
Washington county members of the Red Horsers Inc plan the seventh annual reunion January 12 and 15 at Hotel Fort Des Moines. Registration was due by December 31. The event is open to men from Ist Iowa Cavalry, 2nd Cavalry, 125th Cavalry Sq, and 7th Cavalry with wives and friends invited. A Saturday banquet and dance is a highlight.
The Iowa Staters banquet at the YMCA will feature P. Watt detailing a two month tour as leader of the 1954 International Farm Youth Exchange delegation. Taff replaces Richard Lemon to share views on agriculture home life and scenes in Europe and the Near East. Tickets are $1.50 from Tori Robb and reservations are urged.
Washington county group Rural Young People will sponsor a snowball dance Thursday evening January 10 in the Washington Legion hall at city hall. Dancing starts at 8:00 pm and continues until 12:30 am with the Jimmy Dennis orchestra providing music. The public is invited to attend.
In Chicago the CIO United Packinghouse Workers formed a strike strategy committee empowered to call a strike and invited AFL Amalgamated Meat Cutters to join. Delegates from 250 UPW locals, representing 50,000 members, criticized the six-cent wage offer from Armour and Swift. The union seeks a $5,000 guaranteed annual wage and has voted for a nationwide strike if necessary, though no date was set.
President Truman and Winston Churchill resumed talks at the White House to coordinate politics and address world problems. Churchill arrived with Sir Oliver Franks and Anthony Eden as they plan plenary sessions to discuss issues including an Atlantic pact and streamline organization.
General Eisenhower signaled support for backers seeking to put his name on the Republican ticket but said he would run only if a clear call to political duty came. He affirmed he would remain head of Western European forces until such a call and would not resign his command to seek office.

Delphine Go Nelson of Des Moines drove in a crash four miles west of Washington on Sunday at 2 pm. Her car attempted to pass Merle Offenheiser of Oxford, swerved into the Oxford vehicle, and veered into a ditch. Damage estimated at 500 dollars with no injuries.
Eight persons remained unaccounted for as a massive one million dollar fire damaged Westfield Massachusetts professional building. Sixteen others were in hospital with burns and injuries. Fire crews pressed searches while ruins stayed hot and no bodies were recovered.
Georgetown Massachusetts police stopped Richard Kent 24 of Tewksbury to question a pony in his car. He confessed to stealing the animal as a family pet for his two young sons. The report notes a statistic about 40 million Americans over age 40 who wear glasses.
County Farm Bureau workers meet at the YMCA for an oyster supper and program to start their annual campaign. Des Moines reports volunteers in 4% counties will launch drives to reach a peak near 60,000 members for 1952. Winnebago County already surpassed its quota with 1,141 farm families signed up before 1951 ended.
Two Muscatine youths La verne Al Pratt and Loren J. Allison were arrested Saturday after assaulting a farmer and his son near Kalona. Pratt paid a $100 fine and was released. Allison could not pay and remains in county jail. Allison will be turned over to air force authorities for AWOL status. Pratt is on parole from Ana Hiossa.
Mrs. Fred E. Bartow of 717 South Iowa won a $200 Westins home Laundromat and a year’s supply of Rain-Soft-Rinso in the Arthur Godfrey contest. Her entry was chosen for originality sincerity and aptness by an independent judging body. She wrote the prize-winning last line in the single for May.
United Nations leaders voiced suspicion that Communist delegates are sabotaging Korean armistice talks in Panmunjom to push the issue to the U.N. Security Council. Vice Admiral C Turner Joy and General Matthew Ridgway discussed the deadlock as observers called the Reds strange and weird while the West rejects moving talks.
Mr and Mrs L M Eicher returned home from Edinboro Pennsylvania where they had visited their daughter Jane Mrs Eicher had completed a month with Major Roger Eicher and family in Augusta Georgia and joined her husband for the trip back.
The annual Farm Service company meeting will be held in the Methodist church basement Thursday evening with dinner at 6 30. Ed Ver Steeg the company manager announced reservations for the dinner must be made by Wednesday evening by contacting the Farm Service office in the Farm Bureau building.
Funeral services for Jesver G Medlin were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Sherman's funeral home with Dr. W. J. Grossheim officiating. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery with Military services at the graveside by VEW. Pallbearers included Truman Hysell, Jess Radda, Milo Steele Jr., Don Hazen, Bernard Payn, and Harold Kerr.
Dawson elected chairman of the Associate Presbyterian Church in Washington for the coming year. At the annual congregational dinner and meeting Abk. Atchison supervised duties as past chairman. Officers include Clara Sinclair secretary George Masson Sr treasurer George Masson Jr director of music. Committees appointed and pledges reported to cover all departments.
Washington county 4 H clubs and the Rural Youth United Peoples are urged to pledge to the International Farm Youth Exchange program for 1452. The program sends American farm youths to foreign counties to study farming and report back. This year the program expands to include South American nations and others worldwide. Funding comes from 4 H clubs and other organizations. Each club is asked to pledge from $23 to $15 toward this year.
Union services in the Baptist church open the local prayer observance as Washington congregations mark the National Week of Prayer. Rev Earl Longfellow presided last night with Rev Thomas Polk speaking and Re Milo Phillips assisting. services continue nightly through Friday at 7.20 p.m. with Tony Hotle presiding tonight and Dr. William J. Grosheim speaking.
Adult farmer classes resume at the Washington high school building Wednesday at 7 30 P M after the holiday vacation. The vocational room will host the meeting with the topic Farm Crops and will cover crops fertilizers silage sheep and beet problems. There are five meetings in the current series and any interested person is urged to attend each Wednesday night.
Death notice for Merle Samson of Morning Sun who died Friday in a Burlington hospital after a ten day illness from a heart attack. Survived by wife Irene a daughter and a grandchild in Washington DC a half sister in Cedar Rapids and relatives including step mother Nettie Samson and Mrs O L Samson of Morning Sun. Services held 2 p m today at Morning Sun with burial there.
