Denver Jan 7 A heated joint session over governor election returns ends with a 15 member committee to canvass votes and report by 2 PM Monday. Senate President Haggett and House Speaker Dickson clash over presiding power amid strong legal arguments.
A stagelike standoff in the legislature ends with both Haggett and Dickson presiding across a joint session. The rostrum moves nowhere as gavels pound and lawmakers shout, while Frewen raises a point of order that is contested amid confusion.
A protest from Governor Peabody delayed the canvass of votes as lawmakers debated an election investigation. A committee was approved to report by Monday after Frewen raised points of order. The resolution passed 51 to 1 with 17 Republicans present and two Democrats attending but not voting. The joint session dissolved and the house adjourned.
A bottle tossed overboard by J A C Fenton of McAvoy Brewing in July 1904 drifted to a Scottish port. An envelope marked from a small Scottish harbor arrived in Chicago with the note stating the bottle’s journey from Liverpool to the Atlantic Ocean. The finder’s reply came from Achninver Bay near Cape Wrath, Scotland.
Columbus Indiana January 7. School authorities question if they run a stable system or a matrimonial bureau. In recent years seven women teachers married, causing vacancies and disruption. One marriage occurred hours before a term, another telegram delayed a return from vacation. Next year the board may require unmarried teachers to sign year long contracts.
In Memphis on January 7 William Jennings Bryan praised President Roosevelt's approach to the Interstate Commerce Commission. He predicted the stance would trigger a split in the Republican party but said Democrats would support the president. Bryan called Roosevelt perhaps the greatest president in U.S. history.
Reports that Vice Admiral Rosestvenskys flag ship the battleship Kninz Souvaroff struck a rock and sunk are unfounded. Mukden dispatch says Field Marshal Oyama sent Kuropatkin news of Port Arthur capitulation and praised its defenders with continued cannonade near Sinchinpu and Shakhe.
A Baltimore and Ohio freight train of forty cars wrecked at Glencoe ten miles east of Sand Patch tunnel in Connellsville Pennsylvania. Five men were killed including a substitute fireman, and four were tramps. The air hose coupling burst in the tunnel causing the train to run away. the engine left the track at a curve and the entire train demolished, blocking east and west tracks.
United States District Judge Charles Swayne of the Northern District of Florida has been impeached by the House on charges of high crimes and misdemeanors. He allegedly imprisoned two men and committed other offenses as part of the claims.
An explosion of a gasoline tank caused a fire at the Hubbard laundry in Greenland Calumet Mich. killed one woman and fatally injured another. Mrs Agnes Houle is dead and Annie Schoen is fatally injured. The blast tore the building from its foundation and overturned it. Six other employees were injured but not seriously.
Jacksonville Illinois Jan 7 Trustees read a letter from alumnus William J Bryan seeking to meet and lecture on economies at his own expense. A date around Jan 11 will be set to discuss Bryan possibly guiding college policy and possibly becoming president.
Comptroller Ridgely received from the Oberlin National Bank receiver a diamond sunburst ring and an emerald ring deposited by Cassie I Chadwick as loan security. The jewels will be kept by the department until a satisfactory bid is received from the receiver.
In Wabash Indiana on January 7 pallbearers at the funeral of Mrs. Robert Knight were young women friends. Serving as pallbearers were Mrs. Will Hutchens Mrs. I E Crafft Mrs. G W Elliott Mrs. Harry Comstock and Miss Gladys Giaardner.
Madison Wis Jan 7 Judge Rominzo Bunn of the United States court for the western district of Wisconsin has resigned and will retire from the federal bench on Jan 9 after more than twenty seven years of service. He retires on full salary having been eligible to retire five years ago at age 70.
Foreign Minister Tittoni of Italy is reported to be recovering after an apoplexy attack. Elsewhere German papers discuss Dr Ida Hilsiker’s proposal that women serve one year in the military. Justice Greenbaum of the New York state supreme court denied Nan Patterson bail.
In Marquette Bliss who faced a 15 year term for a statutory offense left for his Michigan home under clemency after a parole rejection and threat of asylum. In Colorado Brown and Crump moved to quash conspiracy to murder charges against Western Federation officials including Moyer Thigwood Williams and Baker. A hunting accident near Gowdy involved a gas can with nitroglycerin blowing off a dog tail. Game Warden Chapman announced continuation of deputies with Hoyt named chief deputy.
H. O. Barc ber, vice president of the wrecked Commercial bank, is sentenced to three years and a half in the penitentiary by Judge Mackey for embezzlement. An appeal will be taken.
President has sent to the Senate the nomination of Arthur T. Sanborn to be judge for the western district of Wisconsin. The move comes as part of judicial appointments announced today in Washington.
Miss Bessie M. Ramsay and Claude C. Corrigan aged 19 ran away to Trinidad and were married. They swore falsely about age and residence and criminal charges may follow. Parents oppose marriage and may seek annullment.
An engine on the Duluth, Massabe and Northern road in charge of Swan Anderson ran down and killed Julius Berg aged 12, visiting from Michigan. Fire destroyed the Harlem grain elevator near Kansas City with $150,000 loss. Confusing text mentions names and a California prisoner sentence for an 11 year old in San Francisco.
A Philadelphia gathering urged quick Senate ratification of Roosevelt Day arbitration treaties with Great Britain Germany Russia and others. Prominent speakers including ex ministers and officials voiced support and sent resolutions to Pennsylvania senators. The event underscored belief in peaceful adjudication and global cooperation.
In Seattle Washington on January 7 Charles W Armstrong testifies in superior court that his wife, his divorce plaintiff, caused the deaths of their three children by dosing them with sleeping medicine. He says physicians confirmed the cause and that she administered the drugs while at home to avoid social duties. All three infants died within months of birth.
Clayton Smith of Cedar Rapids was arrested by federal authorities on mail fraud charges and held to the grand jury after using the mails to solicit ads for fifty publications tied to the Iowa Advertising company. The alleged publications did not exist and bonds were not posted.
Springfield Massachusetts January 7 The city hall valued at more than fifty thousand dollars was destroyed by fire in less than an hour. About fifty people were in the building and the flames spread quickly causing many narrow escapes but it is believed all escaped. Across the street is the police station and courthouse. The building had caught fire several times but was only slightly damaged previously.
Officers were installed for the coming year at the A O U W Hall. George Reister became Master of Workmen with Daniel Aughey as Recorder and Henry Minick as Past Master of Workmen. Nate Jones oversaw as Overseer Tom McFarland served as Guide. Harry McCall became Financier Chas Saling Receiver. O T Smith arrived this morning and will spend Sunday at home. Mrs George Welch visited the city last evening and returned to Ainsworth today.
