Ten Perish As Fire Rages Through Carleton Hotel
A pre-dawn flash fire trapped guests at the Carleton Hotel in downtown St. Paul. Ten people, three women and seven men, died as flames swept all four stories. Seventeen injured, four in critical condition. Fire officials continued rubble searches as cold weather and ice hindered operations. Hotel records listed 54 guests. the cause under investigation.

Life Investors Insurance Co of Cedar Rapids announced it has over 300 million dollars in force in six years. Oliver Bennett, former insurance commissioner, bought policies for his three sons in a Mapleton livestock operation. The firm operates in nine states plus Iowa. One Illinois policy holder, Carl Goodrich, later died in the Keokuk Thanksgiving fire and explosion, leaving four orphans.

No funds for Linn anti poverty program
Linn County officials were told a proposed 142375 grant from the U S Labor Department will not be available due to funding shortfalls. The money would have funded an in school Youth Corps program giving part time jobs to needy Linn County teens to keep them in school. About 228 youths would have benefited. A Youth Corps spokesman said many national projects were being canceled for lack of money.
