A Public Affairs committee survey compares Washington teachers salaries with the state average. Using 1953-54 and 1954-55 salary schedules, Washington ranks from 20th to 9th in 1953-54 and 9th to 5th in 1954-55 among 26 Iowa cities. Conclusion: Washington teachers are generally paid at or above the state average for their size category.
Bill Smart of Washington was installed as lieutenant governor of the first division of the Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis district during a Wednesday night Ladies Night at the Washington YMCA. Ed Rose of Iowa City led the installation. Attending district officers Pierce Wittmer and Art Steffey could not attend due to weather. The program featured a Washington high school boys octet and magician Leon Hillman. Reverend Halsey Wakelin led singing. John Owen presided.
Hawkeye Area Boy Scout council urges each unit to nominate a boy for the World Jamboree to be held August 18 to 28 at Niagara on the Lake Ontario Canada. Only 1,500 U S delegates. four finalists from the council districts. two named scouts and two alternates. Candidates must be 14 to 17, hold rank, camp craft skill, and be a leader at school church and in Scouting. The site will host 15,000 Scouts on a 500 acre camp.
Des Moines reports more than $1,300 has been received by the Iowa Society for Crippled Children through William S Beardsley memorial gifts. Allen Whitfield announced this as Beardsley died in an auto accident November 21 and his family urged donations in lieu of flowers to aid crippled children.
A spokesman for the Iowa Free Roads Assn urged Iowa legislators to proceed cautiously before creating a toll road authority. Executive Secretary Robert L. Bliss said more studies are needed to determine feasibility and financing options, noting a prior report proposing a 180 million dollar road at 3.5 percent interest.
Iowa farmers had 6.2 million bushels of the 1954 corn crop under government price supports by mid-December, far below 31 million a year earlier. Drought damaged much of the 1954 corn, while 43 percent of farms met acreage allowances. Soybeans totaled 9.9 million under seal, 1.5 million below the 1953 record as 1954 produced the largest soybean crop in state history. Meyer noted many producers may hold soybeans for higher prices.
Marshall County enters a seventh day without a county attorney as the Board of Supervisors again fails to appoint a successor to Max Milo Mills. Mills resigned for illness. Leonard Grimes, his interim assistant, applied but was not chosen, and others also declined. Judges continue to appoint state representation in cases.
The body of 5 year old Janelda Florence Eberlin was recovered from a slough near the sites where her sisters were found earlier. Nelson Anger, former East Dubuque police chief, recovered the girl about five minutes after the search resumed.
Thomas J. Ford of the Nash Garage in New London drove his Chevrolet into an Oldsmobile and a Renault, causing damage to both vehicles in the incident.
Justice Department studies a House subcommittee finding that the United States was bilked of at least one million dollars in a tungsten scandal involving a Thailand based ring, dummy companies, bribery claims, and a royal prince. The contracts for 17 million dollars of tungsten during the Korean War were suspended after alleged manipulations by four Thai mining firms. About 500 thousand dollars worth of tungsten has been delivered and unpaid.
Washington Jaycees announce the annual Distinguished Service Award presentation to the outstanding local young man. Organizations and individuals may submit nominations with qualifications. last year’s winner was Keith Vetter.
President Eisenhower warned Congress against reversing the flexible farm price support program. He urged continuation of the road to balance production and markets for stable farmer incomes. He pledged to seek help for low income farm families and disaster aid improvements.

U N Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold and Chinese Premier Chou En Lai held a three hour talk in Peiping on the fate of 11 American airmen jailed as spies. A follow up meeting was set for Friday at 3 p.m. Peiping time with aides present.
Akron Iowa State Rep J Henry Lucken says he will oppose any increase in the Iowa Highway Patrol size. He notes the 1953 Legislature raised the authorized patrol from 160 to 225 but cites no change in highway accident rates. He calls for closer cooperation between the patrol and local law enforcement.
A 2-cent sales tax on beer and cigarettes would yield about 2.8 million dollars annually for Iowa, the Tax Commission said. The report notes beer and cigarettes are untaxed at retail and outlines potential effects, including dealer behavior and broader tobacco tax implications.
