Mrs. Robert Spera of Kalamazoo brought her pet duck Ducky on a holiday trip to Washington County where the bird traveled in the car and became a user of home life. Ducky performs tricks, chases lettuce, and quacks for treats, following Mrs. Spera like a dog and attracting surprised stares from pedestrians.

Twenty to Testify In Hearing on Death Of Des Moines Officer
About 20 persons subpoenaed to testify at secret inquest into Patrolman Kenneth Lutz deaths. Lutz, 27, found shot in the head in Des Moines by a woman police telephone operator. Coroner Walter Anderson says the inquest will be secret to allow surprise testimony. Lutz died later in a Des Moines hospital. He was found in the bedroom of Mrs Patricia Newman, 40, who called police and said Lutz shot himself with a German Luger pistol. She was questioned and released.

VFW Essay Contest Open to Wash ington County High Schoolers
Washington county high school students are urged to enter the VFW Auxiliary annual essay contest on Democracy Is What We Make It. Essays must not exceed 1000 words and be judged on originality and prose. Local entries close March 15, 1953 with prizes of 15, 10 and 5 dollars. First place advances to the state contest with 100, 50 and 25 dollar prizes, then the state winner moves to the national contest. The VFW aims to build good citizens through this program.
