A detachment of nearly 1000 marines departed Morehead City aboard two navy transports bound for the U S Mediterranean fleet. The rapid loading enabled an earlier than planned sailing to reinforce warship personnel with tanks guns and combat gear. Officials did not reveal exact strength. observers estimated 800 to 1000 marines plus heavy equipment aboard.

Des Moines Iowa Jan 6 State Treasurer John M Grimes and State Auditor C Chet Akers announced their candidacies for Republican nomination in the June primary. Grimes cited increased office duties and rising revenue sources while Akers sought a sixth term. Grimes born Feb 1 was appointed treasurer in 1943 and previously edited newspapers. Akers has served as auditor since 1939.

Judge C. R. Stafford Dies in Muscatine
District Judge Charles N. Stafford aged 66 of Muscatine died in a hospital after a two week illness following a relapse. He had been recovering from an operation but worsened late yesterday. Stafford served five terms as Muscatine county attorney and one term as county treasurer. A Keokuk native, he practiced law in Muscatine since 1923.
