Twenty six divorces were granted between 2 p.m. Tuesday and 5 p.m. Wednesday in Black Hawk County. The divorce docket now holds 105 applications, one of the heaviest on record.
Within the next 60 days 12 300 quarts of milk will be distributed to under privileged children in Cedar Rapids by members of the Young men's bureau of the Chamber of Commerce. Money has been raised through dances and other public benefits.
Estherville city council trimmed street names at its last session. East and west routes will be numbered thereafter. Lincoln Street, the city’s Main Street, has been renamed Central Avenue.

Sidney-Carl Adle a 41 year old school bus driver was shot in the eye by an air rifle fired by two grade school boys riding a bicycle. He was hospitalized in Lincoln Nebraska where doctors expect to remove his eye.
Fairfield man WPA worker Fairfield-Vane K Bell 23 is jailed on a second degree murder charge in the death of 16 year old Helen Simon. Simon died at Jefferson County Hospital from effects of a self induced abortion. Bell is also charged with being an accessory to a criminal net.
H C Ridenour of Curlew declares he is not a candidate for state superintendent of public instruction. He claims nomination papers were forged by a practical joker and says he sticks strictly to his own business.
Professor Herbert Martin head of Iowa University philosophy department flew to Washington D C to officiate at a wedding. The couple are Miss Mary LeCron and George M Foster Jr with Mary LeCron's family listed as from Moines and Washington while Foster is from Otumwa.
William S. Knudsen of General Motors predicted a business upturn by spring and urged confidence in the future. He testified before the Senate recession investigation and said a forthcoming administration policy statement could improve conditions.
Batavia Java January 6 The Dutch government cancelled indefinitely all leaves of absence for military and naval personnel in Java after secret information reaching The Hague from the Tokyo embassy. The measure reflects heightened wartime tension and security concerns in the region.

Former state curator Edgar Rf. Harlan aged 69 returns to Des Moines amid insinuations over the Davenport memorial fund amounting to 18 900 dollars. He defends himself saying he never misused state funds while seeking full explanation of fund expenditures and noting his illness and travel history.
A Ford plant worker, James Gailum, 24, suffered severe burns after two men poured acid on him. Police arrested 20 suspects in a raid on United Automobile Workers headquarters, with the union denying involvement amid a CIO strike at the local plant.
Lloyd Houvenagle of Davenport is named the new manager of the A and P company store, succeeding Dennis Perry who arrived from Truscatine last August. Mitchell and the state board of assessment and review decide that homeowners who pay the full property tax by April 1 receive the maximum 25 mile credit under the new homestead exemption law. County treasurers disputed whether full payment only earns half credit until the second half is due. A refund would be issued then for the remaining credit.
Francis Hense a 22 year old millworker from Dubuque whose hobby is building models has won a 1500 government contract to model a barge under construction in the Dubuque harbor. He secured the job after Ira Davenport of Dubuque Boat & Roller Works saw his models of the Queen Mary and a local fire engine displayed downtown.

Don H. Brown a 58 year old trucker in Indianapolis used a frontier single action six shooter to kill an unidentified Black thief during a gun duel outside a filling station. Two attendants were present when the confrontation escalated. the thief drew a modern pistol and both men exchanged fire, the bullet through the heart killing the thief instantly. Brown said he kept the six shooter because it does not like new fangled guns.
Bertha Watters 28 faces trial January 11 before Judge M F Edwards on one of two counts charging the killing of her infant son Eugene 7 months and daughter Lavonne. The case involves options on insanity defenses and potential commitment to a mental ward depending on verdict. She also wounded two other children Bernard and Beverly as they slept at the Bremer county poor farm cabin on December 21. Her WPA husband was returning with Christmas gifts when the tragedy occurred.
