Three men died in separate Monday night crashes across Iowa. The victims were C. R. Jackson, 47, a farmer from Indaanaola. Omer Tungesvik, 45, a farmer from Radcliffe. and Oswald Handke, 68, from Guttenberg.
Ernest Stalle and his wife Marie Stahle were found dead in their Solon home after an afternoon shooting. Neighbors heard a scream, town marshal Leo Kesler forced entry and found Stahle dead from a self-inflicted gunshot after Mrs. Stahle had been shot twice with a 32 caliber pistol. Johnson County Coroner Frank E. Love of Iowa City confirmed the injuries.
The new prisoner of war camp near Algona is nearly complete and has been turned over to the government. Col Joseph Church now heads the facility, with fifty soldiers arriving to assist in readiness for about 5000 officers and guards expected within a week to ten days. Church previously led the A.S.T.P. unit at Vermillion South Dakota State University.
Four teenage boys ages 16 and 17, arrested this week in a juvenile crime ring, will be turned over today to Tama police. They confessed to stealing 14 cars in Polk and nine nearby counties and to breaking into two Tama grocery stores and attempting to break into a local tavern. They also admitted breaking into a Council Bluffs grocery in December.
Judge Beehly ruled against the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America in Marek et al and Dawson v. Pipeline, denying motions to strike amendment parts and to dismiss or require more specific statements. Plaintiffs must comply within ten days, while the defendant chooses to stand or plead further within 35 days. In Durst v Lunow, the court sustained a motion to require more specific action, giving five days to elect to stand or plead.
W. QO Morgan, chairman of the Washington county AAA committee, announces a county wide series of war food production conferences starting January 19 in each town. Farmers statewide urged to attend to learn world food needs and farm adjustments. Participants include Lawrence Mally PSA J W Chandler extension director and W L Gates AAA. Meetings begin 1 pm with an evening session in Ainsworth.
Joseph Alexander Porter 86 died at his home 415 South Fourth avenue at eight this morning after a long illness with heart complications. Funeral services will be Friday at 2:30 PM at United Presbyterian church with Rev. George Kerr in charge. Burial at Winfield. Surviving: wife Olive and three daughters Mrs. George Slosser Mt. Vernon Mo., Mrs. George McGinnis Clinton Wis., Mrs. Palmer Wilson Dallas Center, Town. five grandchildren and sister Mrs. Anna Wheeler Winfield. He served on the Washington board of education and was an elder at Winfield United Presbyterian Church. He belonged to the Journal Three-Quarter Century club. Born February 56, 1857 near Wyman to Hugh and Lydia Porter.
President Roosevelt ordered the special emergency board reconvened to consider overtime pay claims by non-operating railway labor unions. The move aims to break a wage dispute with carriers, amid a broader railroad crisis and earlier government seizure threats.
At Leon Beatty post meeting Commander Charles Kennedy appointed Martin Whit taker Jed Downing and Harry Simpson to plan entertainment for the county Legion meeting here the evening of Jan 25. It will be a joint Legion and Auxiliary meeting with State Commander Dr Charles Logan of Keokuk expected to attend. Bruce Smith and Karl Galloway former members attended as guests.
Joseph A Porter, former member of the Washington board of education, died this morning after a long illness. He served for a number of years on the school board.
The official Soviet Pravda accuses Wendell L. Willkie of double-dealing in U S politics and of courting both pro Russia and anti Soviet factions. It rebukes his remarks on Finland Poland and the Baltic states and says the Baltic issue is an internal Soviet matter. Willkie had no comment when contacted in New York.
Washington streets and highways posed danger to cars and trucks as a late day mist froze on sidewalks and pavement turning them icy. Several near accidents were reported with skidding and ditching but no serious crashes. A light snow overnight covered the ice and a northwest wind and falling temperatures raised blizzard concerns if more snow falls.

Funeral services for Mrs Sarah J. Kelley were held at L A Jones funeral home with Rev Ivan Riess in charge. pallbearers were her six sons. Burial at Elm Grove Cemetery.
