The piece argues that human effort fails to match evil in the modern age. It notes the past’s seeming safety and mocks the idea of “good old days.” It ends with a wry remark that life yields only what you invest, minus taxes.
Nice Day, Not So Nice Weather in Iowa
A lighthearted Iowa weather note describes unpredictable conditions and a humorous delivery day. Reporters recount driving bundles of newspapers to Journal carriers homes, expecting complaints but meeting calm acceptance. A carrier’s father jokes that the route may fall to him if the boy is sick.

Summer in St Louis ghetto inspires Luther College student
Steve Lovick, a Luther College sophomore from Decorah, spoke to the Y's Men's club about his six week stay last summer in a black ghetto of St Louis where he worked at a settlement center run by the United Church of Christ. The program served about 165 children ages six to twelve and involved Luther students, nuns, student priests, and a Black Vietnam veteran as lead teacher. Steve lived in a near neighborhood fortress apartment, witnessed occasional gunfire, and learned that ghetto life and values differ vastly from his upbringing. He earned $500 for the summer, invested $150 of his own money, and plans to pursue social work after college, hoping to return to similar work.

The Coup Without a Name In Bridge Play
In the Intercollegiate Bridge championship a four spade contract faced clever defense. West led ace clubs then ruffed later to force a setting trick, but declarers used a rare coup without a name to destroy East West communication. The maneuver trades a diamond loser for a non existent heart, allowing a successful declarer line.
