Washington fire chief Lew McFadden said firefighters responded after 9 p.m. Saturday to a kitchen incident that destroyed the motor and fan but left structural damage limited and with heavy smoke in the area. Nearby trash pickup and post-Christmas tree collection were altered by snow delays.
Iowa endured a statewide blizzard described as the worst in nearly thirty years. Des Moines and other cities faced near standstills as 12 to 60 inch accumulations, hundreds of cars in ditches, hospitals and offices closed, and schools delaying openings. Two highway deaths and seven more storm related fatalities were reported.
Washingtonians wrestled with 13 inches of snow as cars were abandoned and plows cleared streets. Wrecker services were busy while county workers labored through the night. roads north and west of Washington remained worse than highways. Schools closed, churches canceled services, and many offices opened as crews pushed snow back and prepared for improving weather.

United Press International reports 440 people killed in traffic over the New Year holiday period from 6 p.m. Thursday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday. The tally included 40 traffic incidents, 3 fires, 6 planes, and 3 other causes, with total fatalities at 526 to date. A National Safety Council spokesman warned the final count could exceed 500 due to hazardous driving conditions into the closing hours.
In Glasgow MP Maurice Miller blamed crowding and unsafe exits for the Ibrox Park collapse that killed 66 and injured about 200. He urged clubs to provide covered seating and safer barriers to prevent a repetition, noting long-standing Celtic and Rangers tensions and frequent crowd trouble.
Washington County Extension Service schedules a Corn Day at the Washington YMCA Community Room with morning sessions from 9 30 to 3 30 focusing on corn management amid leaf blight, seed supply and price, plus an afternoon on herbicides and weed control. Speakers Harvey Thompson Steve Ryan and Vivian Jennings hail from Ames Cedar Rapids. A soybean program is planned later this month. Washington UPL. A three year 300 million program to prevent and treat alcoholism is signed by President Nixon, after a bill introduced by Senator Hughes.

Lows range 10 to 15 below zero with continued cold in the southeast, while highs fall to the single digits to teens in the northwest and northeast. Winds shift southeast then northwest as Tuesday brings fair but very cold conditions.
