Chinese forces hoisted the Red flag atop Seoul Municipal building as Red patrols crossed the Han River in pursuit of retreating U N troops. General Ridgway directed the withdrawal, crossing three bridges under heavy fire to save divisions. Thomas Everette Rees of Wyman died in Winfield a heart attack after three months of ill health. Funeral Saturday at 1 30 pm at Winfield Methodist Church with Rev. Roger Crabtree officiating and burial in Winfield Cemetery. Born September 26 1886 in Louisa County he was the son of John M and Sophia Rees. Survived by wife two sons Thomas Carlyle Rees and Vician LeRoy Rees a daughter Ruby Arlene Swan four grandchildren one brother J Ralph Rees and one sister Mae Rees.

Mrs. Mary Lahr aged 90 of East Pleasant Plain died at her home at 2 AM after a period of declining health. Funeral plans pending at Omar Hoskins Funeral Home in Brighton. Born June 21 1860 in Harper she married Peter Lahr in 1878. Surviving daughters and sons include four daughters two sons twenty seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Preceded by two sons John and George. In a separate brief item twins born on Paul Revere anniversary were named Paula and Vera.

Mr. Baker, from Livermore Iowa, brings 15 years hog buying experience and two daughters. Mr. Conard of Winfield Iowa has 34 years with Morrell. The station opened today. both men are married, with Catholic and Presbyterian affiliations respectively, and enjoy sports like softball, basketball, and baseball.

Million Dollar Fire Wipes Evansville Downtown
A wind whipped blaze in Evansville destroyed eight buildings and 10 businesses in the downtown area. Firefighters from Evansville and seven nearby communities contained the stubborn fire, with damage so extensive officials could not yet estimate losses. Merchants put losses above 1 million dollars, one firefighter hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The fire began after 1:30 a.m. at the Economy drygoods store near Main and 1st, spreading along Main Street.

Many Students Quit Schools to Enlist
United Press reports expansion of the armed forces is cutting enrollment at Iowa colleges. Men at the University of Iowa Iowa State College and Drake are dropping out to enlist. Draft notices for pre induction physicals will be mailed soon though deferments remain in effect. About 100 UI students canceled spring registrations. Passengers Escape From Burning Plane Crash
A non scheduled C-46 airliner failed on takeoff in Chicago and burned after belly landing in two haystacks. Forty six passengers and three crew survived. five injured including a pregnant woman and a baby. Pilot Marvin Staddon guided the craft to a near ground landing, narrowly missing buildings.

Brighton Man Injured When Station Wagon Hit by Freight
Loren McNeese of the R and R meat market in Brighton was injured when his station wagon was struck by a freight train at Packwood. The collision hurled the car, caused facial cuts and a head injury, a rib fracture, and possible additional injuries. He was taken to Jefferson county hospital.
