Grinnell College remains linked to the WPA as a graduate school outlet. Alumnus Harry Hopkins left relief leadership to head commerce, and his successor named Florence Kerr as assistant administrator overseeing the women’s and professional division.
Vivian Eileen Brown, 23, of Waterloo, underwent a nearly two hour operation at Iowa Methodist Hospital that may let her walk again. Doctors said she is getting along fine after four years in bed due to a rare bone disease.
Dr. R. B. Blyth longtime pastor of First Congregational Church Burlington has resigned after nine and a half years to accept the pastorate of Brooklyn Heights Congregational Church in Cleveland Ohio.

Montgomery county sheriff Zeph Morgan, sworn in at Red Oak, launches investigation into a burglary at the JL W Scott jewelry store in Villicssa. A burglar broke the front door and escaped with diamonds and watches valued at $300.
Virginia ay man 19 who disappeared near Cedar Rapids returned home unaware of her father s death in Iowa City hours earlier. She had visited in Waterloo and knew nothing of the tragedy until returning.
Sheriff A M Tilton, a Democrat, appears defeated but resumes office following a district court appeal that blocks Sheriff elect Don Phipps from taking office. The recount board had given Phipps a four vote win, while the canvass showed Phipps ahead by 17. A district court ruling is awaited next week.
Des Moines members of Iowa's state women's advisory committee on the New York World fair will hold a luncheon meeting Saturday to outline future plans. Mrs H C Houghton Jr of Red Oak chairs the advisory group aiding the New York world fair committee. Mrs Leona Wood of Des Moines, head of the speakers bureau, will preside.
The Citadel is named best picture for the year and James Cagney wins best actor for Angels With Dirty Faces. Both films are playing at Washington State Theater, marking a rare twin Academy Award week for the venue.
At a city council meeting the Elm Grove cemetery road PWA project extension to June 1 1939 was requested due to winter weather. Funeral services for Mrs Lydia Stephens Bales were conducted at the Friends church in Richland Monday with Rev Rond and a Friends minister officiating. Her husband died 29 years ago, and she leaves three daughters, several grandchildren, two sisters Mrs Dave Lemmon and Mrs W F Leppert of Washington. Mrs Bales spent most of her life in Keokuk.
Funeral services for George M. Stewart will be held at Sherman’s naval home at 2 PM Thursday. Rev. Wim. M. Nichol Jr. and Rev. F. W. Eastwood will conduct. Burial will be in Elm Grove. Survived by Flora Stewart. brothers W. O. Stewart and John Stewart. half siblings Ralph, Jee, Alice Reynolds, Edd Statler, Russell Bell, M Pierce, Jessie Stewart. lifelong Washington County farmer.
