Roosevelt Signs Baby Chick Code for Fair Competition
President Roosevelt signed the baby chick code on December 27, taking effect January 2 for hatcherymen nationwide. It sets a uniform wage scale, fixes eye size for eggs, bans certain sales and practices below cost, outlaws false advertising, and guarantees farmers a premium for required extra effort. Violators face a 500 dollar daily fine. Iowa hatcherymen will hold district meetings starting January 8 to study the code with officials from NRA and AAA. W. C. Ramseyer and Prof. W. R. Whitfield will lead instruction on costs and compliance. Joe M. Wolfe, county hatchery chair, notes district meetings in Fairfield and district leadership under Thaxter of Mt. Pleasant.
