Russians Seek Embassy Asylum After Persecution Claim

Embassy officials said they did not request political asylum and cited Soviet permission issues for leaving. The group, calling themselves Evangelical Christians, complained of religious holiday bans and separation from children, while some men warned they would be shot. Soviet authorities provided a meal before taking them away, and no formal guarantee was given. The group hailed from the Siberian city of Chernogrosk and asserted religious persecution.
