In Sioux City a Flying Fortress crashed near Hornick Indiana during a training flight. At least seven crew members died and a list of casualties will be released after next of kin are notified. Officials say the bomber came in low, struck a tree, then burst into flames despite the pilot's attempt to regain flight.
All four convicts who escaped from the Anamosa reformatory were recaptured in Davenport on Sunday. Bryl and Cassidy were seized by State Senator Frank D. Martin, who held them at shotgun point in his garage loft before calling the sheriff. Brown and the remaining fugitive were arrested in a Davenport home and in West Davenport after a bus driver alerted police.
DES MOINES Income tax returns for 1943 may be filed with the federal Internal Revenue offices in town beginning today. Edward H. Birmingham collector of internal revenue said they must be filed not later than March 15. Birmingham warned that thousands more persons will pay income tax and it is important to make returns early. If too many wait until the last few days it will be impossible for us to give them help on their returns.
OSKALOOSA Iowa Bruce Marrow three son of the public school superintendent at What Cheer suffered a fractured hip in a wrestling match with his brother at Mahaska hospital here Sunday. He was listed in stable condition as doctors treated the injury.

Ernest Rudolph of Brighton was elected chairman of the Washington county board of supervisors at the first meeting of the year. The board named S. G. A traveling navy V-5 aviation cadet selection board will convene in Washington on Friday January 14 to interview 17 or 18 year olds who graduate high school by March 1. Applicants may stay in high school, then receive eight months V-12 training and sixteen months as an Aviation Cadet before commissioning as ensigns. If not qualified, applicants may be considered for navy radio technician training.
The comptroller of the currency ordered all National banks to file reports of their condition as of December 31, 1943. In Des Moines a statement of condition for all state banks as of December 31 was noted.
A series of blasts destroyed a United States destroyer near the entrance to New York Harbor. About 163 crew members were saved, with 108 known to be injured and treated in multiple New York area hospitals. The ship’s name and death toll were withheld pending next of kin notices.

Harry E. Dodson 75 died suddenly at his home 927 South Third avenue at 6 15 PM yesterday while listening to a radio. He had been ill for three years but death was due to a heart attack. Funeral arrangements are pending as relatives distant. He was born April 5 1868 in Elsa Illinois and married Addie Morrison March 10 1889 in Burden Kansas. Survived by wife two sons Essie Dodson Fred Dodson two daughters Dayton Eden and Mrs William Bell and five grandchildren. The family moved from Kansas to Jersey County Illinois and then to Lone Tree Iowa before settling near Washington in 1935.
The United Presbyterian church held its annual New Year dinner with about 300 congregants in attendance. A Ladies Aid committee served a bountiful meal, and Roger Sherman led a post dinner program honoring servicemen, including Norman Schoonover’s hospital experiences. A $409 gift to Rev Kerr was approved, and a union day of prayer followed.

Mrs Hazel Marie Barnett Shea died at Wesleyan Memorial hospital Chicago after a long illness. She will be buried in Washington following a 4 pm service at L A Jones funeral home. Born October 26 1888 in Washington she lived in Chicago for twenty years. She is survived by husband Henry A Shea and two brothers Clarence O Barnett Newton Town and Walter A Barnett Washington.
Leon Beatty post of the American Legion holds its first year meeting Tuesday evening at the Legion rooms in city hall. R A Frink chairs the program committee. The post reconvenes Tuesday January 18 and the county Legion meeting for all posts in the county will be held in Washington Tuesday January 25.
The Washington public schools reopened after a ten day Christmas vacation with all teachers returning. Two new instructors joined the staff replacing resignations: Bernice Hall becomes physical education for girls in the grade schools, and Mrs Martha S Crusher from Columbia Missouri takes over music and art at Stewart school. Principal Paul Dixon, recently inducted into the army at St Louis, will remain as principal to finish the first semester.
