Slippery highways and treacherous sidewalks grip much of southern Iowa after freezing rain and sleet. By noon some improvement appeared but injuries from falls were reported in Washington and surrounding counties as forecasts warned of continued precipitation and cold snaps into Thursday.
Tom Duncan's Shop for Women enters its fourth year in business this week. The store closes for a store-wide third anniversary sale to run the latter part of the week, with opening Thursday morning starting the three-day event.
In Burlington Vermont Mrs Donald Quinn delivered a daughter named Gale as the November 1950 storm raged.
Washington county's New Year’s Baby contest gains contenders as the Rinner family from route four leads the race with a 1:37 a.m. delivery at Washington county hospital. A second ineligible hospital birth in Columbus Junction occurs while Kalona reports two early arrivals in Riverside and Bontrager areas. Ruth Erlenbush, a former Washington girl, is noted as the mother of Davenport’s first baby of the year.
Walter Farrell, longtime Local Democrat, was elected GOP constable after receiving numerous write in ballots in the June primaries. He posted a $500 bond today to take office in his county area while C. J. O'Keefe was the other constable elected in the same vote.
A defective flue is blamed for a Neosho Missouri blaze that killed widowed mother Mrs. Bobby Martin, 34, and her seven children aged 14 months to 12 years. Coroner Corley Thompson said the fire started in the flue and the family had planned repairs but could not find a worker. The mother supported the children with compensation from the Federal Mining Co. mine.
Dave Livingston, a prominent Washington county individual, was announced as president of the board of directors of the Washington Chamber of Commerce for the coming year. He succeeds L. J. Kehoe, who served as president the past two years. The directors may vote on a vice president later. further details will follow. Livingstons home is north of Washington and he is active across the Midwest as a speaker and political campaign participant.
Announcement of the formation of the Boyer and Easter Insurance Agency by Donald R. Boyer and R. W. Thompson merging two longtime Washington practices. The new partnership will offer all types of insurance and operates at 208 West Washington Street, while Boyer’s abstracting work remains unaffected.
Mrs. Theodore Springman was treated for a hip gunshot wound from an accidental discharge of a rifle at a tavern scene. Sheriff officers said the bullet passed through her body as her husband picked up the gun after a friend returned a borrowed .22 rifle. Investigators deem the incident accidental.
Snow and sleet spread across northern and western Iowa with freezing rain in the remainder this afternoon. Northeasterly winds up to 30 to 35 mph fade tonight then resume midweek. Lows 18 to 24 west, 22 to 28 east. highs 25 to 30 west, 24 to 50 east.
Tokyo dispatch reports Chinese Communist invasion troops pressing a three prong offensive within 14 miles of Seoul as the South Korean government debates abandoning the capital after the U S Seventh Army withdrawal. Front lines show heavy fighting along the 140 mile front with renewed nighttime Chinese advances.
James H Kennedy 69 lifelong Washington county resident died at 11:30 a.m. after a year and a half of illness. He lived on a farm east of Washington and funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Sherman’s Funeral Home with Dr. William J. Grossheim in charge. Burial in El Grove cemetery with Maeasonic lodge at the graveside. Born June 34, 1881 in Forest City Iowa, son of John and Alice Kennedy he moved to Washington at age two and was a member of the Presbyterian church. Survivors include brothers J L Kennedy and Charles Kennedy of Washington and Lloyd Kennedy of Adeline Illinois plus nieces and nephews. Two brothers George and Raymond preceded him in death and two sisters died in infancy.
Reservations remain open for Farm Service Co. annual meeting at the Methodist church on Thursday evening January 4 at 6 50. Manager Chuck Morgan urges calls to 849 by 9 00 Thursday morning. Nearly 150 reservations are already in. Herbert Osineup will provide entertainment after the turkey dinner and KE O Johnston of Farm Bureau Services will be the principal speaker.
United Press dispatch from Seoul describes a massive refugee exodus as about ten million Koreans flee south to escape Chinese forces. The reporter details harrowing scenes of families separated, children killed or dying on the roads, and widespread homelessness as Pu san and Seoul populations collapse under the displacement.
Izaak Walton League members from 11 chapters in southeastern Iowa will gather at St. James social hall on Monday January 8 at 7 30 p m for a rally. Murray Russell and Harry Reetor will lead discussion on upcoming legislation and the Little Hoover report with Norman Lechner and committee serving refreshments.
Washington schools plan a Wednesday morning return to regular class work after the Christmas and New Year holidays. Classes were dismissed Friday December 22 for break.
United Press reports the New Year period saw 285 traffic deaths from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday midnight, with total accidental deaths at 440. Weather helped reduce traffic toll but fire deaths rose in the Midwest and East, including a fatal Neosho, Missouri home blaze that claimed a widowed mother and seven children. Two infant boys and a 70 year old grandfather perished in a Winter Haven, Florida fire.
Members are reminded of a Moose lodge meeting planned for Wednesday evening in the Legion rooms at city hall starting 7 20. After the business session a lunch will be served.
Auto license plate sales for 1951 are lagging behind the same period last year. County Treasurer W E Howell reported today December 30 1950 only 2568 1951 licenses had been sold and urged motorists to obtain licenses quickly to avoid a last minute rush before the February deadline.
New congregational officers were installed at the annual year’s cooperative dinner at the Associate Presbyterian Church yesterday. Installed were A. E Atehi congregational chairman, Rhibet Dawson secretary, G. Masson Sr. treasurer, and Masson music director. A report of the finance committee was given during the business session.
