Cold weather dampened attendance at the New Year open house of the Y M C A and Y W C A with about 650 guests, down from 1600 last year. The event featured the Municipal band, soloists, a lunch, and various entertainments across the building.
The first severe cold wave of winter blankets Iowa with subzero readings. Des Moines reports five below zero with Mt. Ayr Sioux City and Connect Bluff s at similar depths. One death from exposure is blamed on the extreme cold while Davenport stays above zero. Highways are mostly clear with some slick spots.
President Roosevelt summarized plans and hopes for the 1940 session during a one hour conference with Vice President Garner and key administration leaders. He will present the state of the union address in person tomorrow afternoon before a joint session of Congress.
Secretary of State Cor dell Hull announced that the United States has protested to Great Britain over interference with American mails on the high seas. The note cited incidents of British authorities seizing mail from American and neutral ships, some addressed to Germany, others to neutral countries, and urged early cessation.
The Journal has received one birth report since midnight Sunday night. The baby, a boy, arrived at 1 95 AM at the home of Mr and Mrs Vaughn Cochran in West Chester with nurse Thelma Luther assisting. Doctors with knowledge of earlier county births should notify the Journal to announce the county's first 1940 baby.
Washingtons public schools reopen with all teachers back except Anita Yellin of Stewart school IL absent per Supt B A Ralston. Mrs A K E Atchison fills her place temporarily. Many kindergarten and first and second graders out with colds, but most pupils return. Schools had been dismissed since December 21 for vacation.
Miss Helen Cresswell of Hillsboro Iowa is appointed acting director of the professional and service division of the Works Progress Administration effective immediately. She succeeds Jessie Hanthorn who resigned recently. Cresswell has led professional and service division projects in Polk county since 1938 and previously held RELIEF roles in Van Buren and Washington counties.
Mr and Mrs Wendell Shatter were dinner guests yesterday of the former's mother Mrs Ina Shatter at her home for a family visit.
Mrs Thomas J Thompson widow of Dr Thomas J Thompson died at Washington county hospital yesterday at 4 22 p m She was 78 She had been ill since 1938 including a long hospital stay Funeral services are by Jones Funeral home Thursday at 2 30 p m in the Methodist church Rev Rh C Keagy will officiate Burial in the Jones Thompson mausoleum at Bim Grove cemetery Angeline McClintic daughter of Robert and Martha Custer McClintic born February 16 1857 married Thomas J Thompson October 2 1873 Washington residence later 827 South Second Street
The Methodist men's club will host a Wednesday dinner with a whole roast pig as the centerpiece. Officers announced additional menu items and an engaging program for the regular club event.
Mrs. Thompson, long tied to Pleasant Hill and later the Methodist church during Dr. A B Smith’s era, passed away after a prolonged illness. Survived by daughter Dora Jones and sister Susannah Tomlinson with two half sisters in Washington, she received hundreds of cards during her final year in bed.
Mrs J A McCoy aged 86 died at 9 15 this morning in Washington County Hospital where she had been a patient since December 10 after a fall caused a severe head injury. Funeral arrangements are pending with Rev R C Keagy to conduct the service at Jones funeral home and burial planned in Elm Grove cemetery.
Before her death she asked her daughter to thank all kind friends neighbors and others through the newspaper for their many acts of kindness visits flowers and letters.
Moscow reports indicate renewed combat on European lines while diplomacy shapes the conflict. British envoy William-ten months of strained relations-embarks on leave as talks with Moscow potentially foretell a broader alliance including Italy and the Soviet Union. Finnish forces reportedly trap large Russian detachments near the Salla front, with 10 000 Russians cut off from Petsamo and Murmansk and a Finnish victory near Nikelby cited by Helsinki dispatches.
Washington D C January 2 United Press survey shows 226 deaths over the weekend from highway accidents train wrecks fires drownings and other causes. National Safety Council leaders call the development encouraging as the nation counts fewer fatalities than a comparable period last year.
Mrs McCoy is survived by three daughters Nellie Wolfe Devner Colorado L R Eller Besse Fairfield tres Cherry of Washington and Alice Rownd Washington four grandchildren Walke ner Wage ner Ekler and Eller two great grandchildren Patsy and Janet Walkser Bert and Art Yard cousins J M Bratten is a cousin husband died September 19 1921 and a son Claude died March 7 1938.
Harry Whittaker reported that after placing a want ad in the Journal he received 920 rabbits, far exceeding the 500 he sought. The rabbits weighed about 2,000 pounds and were all shipped to Chicago markets.
