The Washington Jaycees will conduct their annual pickup of Christmas trees on Friday evening January 3. Residents should place old trees at the street corner between the sidewalk and curb for collection and burning by the Jaycees’ trucks as they tour the city.
The 91st Congress, set to convene Friday, will focus on a liberalized Social Security bill and limited tax reform hearings. President Johnson said no tax reform proposals will be submitted this year. Mills intends to push a Social Security measure including Medicare hospital coverage for disabled workers under age 65, while the 10 percent surcharge expiration remains unresolved.
Tense Jerusalem vigil as bombs are found in a school bus seat and a milk bottle on Jaffa Road. An Army disposal unit dismantled a bomb planted under a bus carrying 75 Jewish children to Jerusalem. Saudi tensions follow an Israeli raid on Beirut Airport and UN condemnation. Jordan reports a Jordanian vehicle hit by Israeli jets. Lebanon and Britain condemn the raid while Israel defends it as civilian-protective. Prime Minister Eshkol calls for peace and denies civilian casualties, urging renewal of peace talks.

The UN Security Council unanimously condemned Israel for the Beirut Airport raid while Israel rejected the move as inapplicable. The resolution warned against repetition and urged Lebanon to seek appropriate redress for the destruction of 13 Lebanese airliners worth 50 to 100 million dollars. The council also debated the Athens airliner attack amid tensions, with the United States dissociating from blanket denunciations while reaffirming its condemnation of the raid.

Census Bureau estimates 1969 population at 202,254,000 with a 1 percent gain over 1968, the slowest growth since 1940. About 3,487,000 births and 1,929,000 deaths shaped the rise. West and South attracted most newcomers. California led in new residents with 3 million, though Nevada Arizona Alaska Hawaii and Florida grew fastest.
A mass of arctic air brought subzero temperatures from the Dakotas to Texas and the Southeast. Multiple deaths occurred as people succumbed to the cold and carbon monoxide exposure while stranded in snow and vehicles. Authorities warned of ongoing storms and dangerous travel as the cold persisted.
Health secretary Wilbur J. Cohen announced the Medicare premium stays at $8 per month through June 30, 1970. He urged doctors to show restraint in fees and warned Congress may act if voluntary limits are not observed. Cohen said restraint benefits doctors themselves.
Viet Cong handed over three American prisoners to five U.S. officers in a battlefield clearing 50 miles northwest of Saigon. The released men Brigham Jones and Smith were flown to Long Binh hospital in good condition and spoke little, while Maj. James Rowe was also recovering from captivity.
