Babson’s 1953 outlook foresees lower total business volume than 1952 with early-year high activity followed by a gradual slowdown. He warns of weaker room, auto and construction supports, tighter costs, and a tougher labor landscape as the year progresses.
In Seoul the Communist pledge of a large New Year offensive faded as Allied fire kept up a constant barrage at midnight. General Van Fleet reported December had the lightest Allied casualties of the month. Sabre jets claimed higher enemy losses with 27 Reds shot down and others damaged, while the Reds limited to minor probing attacks.
Eclipse Lumber Co marks its 21st year in Washington with its 1932 purchase of Pauls Lumber and L. E. Wilson as longtime manager. G. E. Barney Sakulin succeeds Wilson in 1950 and leads the 1953 outlook noting ample lumber while steel and metal supplies remain tight. Funeral services for Luther E. Johnson were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones funeral home with Rev. Charles King presiding. Pallbearers included Bruce Jones Seth Hoskins Andy Wolfe and Moses Hoskins. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Bus drivers in New York started a strike targeting eight private lines affecting 3.5 million daily riders. Michael J. An inquest into police officer Kenneth Lutz’s death will be held January 7. Dr. Walter Anderson ordered the inquiry after authorities found four bullet holes at the home of Patricia Newman, and evidence conflicted with her account. Lutz, 31, died Tuesday after being wounded Saturday night during a bedroom shooting investigation.
The Washington county court issued 132 marriage licenses in 1952, down from 152 in 1950 and 123 in 1951. The price rose to $3 from $1.50 in 1950, affecting demand. Cupid did not comment on the changes.

Enslin 74 former Washington businessman will be at 10 a m Friday at Jones funeral home with Rev T C Polk in charge burial in La Plata Missouri He died December 29 at University Hospital Iowa City He was born March 2 1878 in St Louis and married Anna Reyner June 7 1905 They moved to Washington in 1918 and ran a store until 1956 Later worked for American Pearl Button Curran before retiring in 1946 Survived by two sons Harry of Columbus Junction and Bern of Peoria Illinois and three grandchildren.
An alert seaman shot and killed a Chinese Communist attempting to hijack the Nationalist merchant ship Teinhang owned by Taiwan Shipping Corp. The would be pirate forced the captain to change course toward Shanghai, but the seaman overpowered him on the bridge and the ship proceeded to Keelung.
A New Year eve blast at a Valparaiso powder magazine triggered a huge fire that killed at least 35 and injured about 350. Fire engines rushed in from Valparaiso and nearby Viña del Mar as thousands watched. The explosion followed the fire and caused shattered windows and panicked crowds.
The 1953 New Year began in Washington with little business activity as stores closed for holiday hours. The sheriff reported no celebratory disturbances and the hospital had no newborns yet, keeping the Journal New Year baby contest undecided.

In Chicago police trapped three hoodlums near a jewelry store. Albert Hagel 28 and Alfred Farley 35 were killed as about 16 officers fired some 30 shots. Another wounded man fled and was hit as he tried to escape. Confederate Arthur Hansen survived with head wounds described as not serious. A police informer had tipped a possible link to a $100000 Congress Hotel robbery last month.
DES MOINES UP Mrs Frances Strausbaugh Conn 31 faces sentencing Jan 10 on a charge of embezzling 16305 dollars from Betts Cadillac Olds Co. She pleaded guilty at arraignment before District Judge Dring Needham, admitting she was cashier for 17 months.
United Press figures show 33 people killed in accidents as 1952 begins. Traffic crashes led with 29 deaths, plus one in a plane, two in fires, and a Pennsylvania crash that killed five near Fayette. The National Safety Council projects 410 traffic deaths over the four day weekend.
Mrs. William Bailey age 86 of 683 North Marion avenue died at 9 30 this morning in the Logan Nursing home after six months of illness and one week of serious condition. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 PM at the Jones funeral home with Dr Reed in charge. Burial is in Elm Grove. She was born in 1866 in Washington, married William M Bailey in 1885, lived on a farm until 1919, joined the Methdist church as a child, and is survived by two sons, two daughters, six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Norwich police report Anthony Valentine attempted to pay a parking fine with pennies sent through the mail. Postage due of 44 cents brought total fines to 16.44 dollars as police stated.
