President Truman cuts price support period to two years
President Truman's action ends government responsibility for maintaining stable farm prices after two full calendar years 1947 and 1948. Congress may review farm laws in that period. Delaying would have extended price support for 166 commodities through 1949 under existing federal loans and purchases. The Steagall amendment directs the Agriculture Department to hold basic prices near parity.
