Des Moines schoolboys Ben and Walter Piper received Capt. F. K. Timmons' weekly safety awards for helping an 85-year-old woman navigate icy streets to her home.
Griswold Robert Ernest Seharf aged 80, who came from Germany 46 years ago, was known as the village blacksmith and was highly respected. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church as the community mourns the longtime craftsman.
Adel judge E. W. Ding rules for M. J. Graham former deputy clerk of court Dallas County in a divorce from Josephine Frank Graham 43 wife of five years on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment.
Harlan four year old Gloria Swenson daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Swenson suffered severe burns when her hair and dress caught fire from a gasoline stove in the Swenson home. It is believed she was warming her hands over the stove when the incident occurred. She is survived by her parents two brothers and one sister.
Cedar Rapids reports the women’s field army of the American Society for the Control of Cancer plans an April membership drive. They aim to raise 15000 dollars to fund an education campaign about early treatment. Membership is one dollar each. state commander is Mrs. T. M. C. Hennessy of Council Bluffs.
Waterloo voters in the East Side district will be asked to approve a $100,000 industrial arts annex to East High School at the March 14 school board election. Board president Charles Sr. McKinstry announced the plan as the start of a 12-year building program.
The Keokuk crew on the two towboats led by Har old Grant tow a 100-foot barge southward on the Upper Mississippi after ice cleared at Nauvoo harbor. The warm spell freed the craft from an ice gorge, resuming the voyage from Rock Island toward Weardstown, Wisconsin.
J. B. Swinburne aged 88 and Irene Hageman aged 46 married last week in Long Beach after two years of typing lessons begun in retirement. Swinburne formerly edited the Humboldt Kosmos and lived in California at the time.
Mrs. Al Lane of Madrid discovers she nearly earned a newspaper headline as the youngest great grandmother in the United States. At 63 in 1930 she was younger than Lynn Mass who claimed the title. Lane now has six great grandchildren and eyes a possible record as the youngest great great grandmother by 1950 or 1955.
Slater resident Oley Nelson 93 a Civil War veteran and former national commander of the GA k and sergeant at arms of the House of Representatives was slightly improved at home after two paralytic strokes. His daughter Anna Shortman, with whom he lived, said he showed some improvement during the day.
Austrian government troops stood by in Graz to prevent Nazi outbreaks after thwarting a plot to seize the town. Nazi flags disappeared from streets though hundreds of Nazis marched with badges as authorities tightened control. Mussolini seeks calm in Britain asking newspapers cease attacks after Eden resignation and peace talks.
The Christian church in Fort Madison hosted a sacred concert by its church choir of about twenty voices. Soloists and instrumental numbers enhanced the program praised for fine interpretation under director Delbert Schroeder. A pre concert lunch was provided by local volunteers including Mrs. Frank Haney and others.
Steady progress continues on the Jeffrey business building at the square corner after a recent fire. I B Finley of Mt Pleasant leads the reconstruction with interior carpentry nearly finished and brick for exterior walls ordered for this week.
Merrill Ostrus departed this morning for Maryville Missouri to attend Northwestern Missouri State Teachers College following a weekend visit with his parents Mr. and Mrs. J T Ostrus.
The Washington basketball tourney begins tonight at the Y featuring 18 independent teams from Washington county and nearby counties Louisa Muscatine Henry Jefferson and Keokuk. It claims to be the largest tourney yet in Washington and includes a Little German band between halves along with boxing and wrestling exhibitions during intermissions.
The Iowa Liquor Commission posted a net income of 854 779 for the six months ending June 30 1927 with a surplus of 2 042 226. State funds received 900 000 plus 26 600 for enforcement, while 132 stores operated at period end and 165 operate today. Classified store breakdown shows Class A B and C revenues and regional totals including Des Moines Council Bluffs Waterloo Cedar Rapids Dubuque Clinton Iowa City Atlantic Boone Nevada Red Oak Shenandoah Hamburg Cedar Falls Audubon State Center Avoca Anita Griswold Villisea and more.
Judge J G Patterson ruled for transfer of the case of M M Rabenold against Ray Hutt to Lee County on the eve of the January term ecourt. Rabenold resident of Fort Madison Lee county suit seeks 1505 67 for medical hospital bills and loss of services of son Roland injured in a traffic accident.
Mrs. Lester Nicola went back to her Sigourney home after spending several weeks at the residence of her daughter Mrs. Victor Trojovsky.
A British Imperial Airways flying boat on a Bangkok to Hong Kong route was attacked by Japanese warships near Hong Kong. Bullets and shells passed close but the plane, clearly marked with British flags, was not struck. The incident spurred expected protests from Britain and Tokyo. A German doctor was injured in a separate assault by a drunken Japanese soldier, who allegedly mistook him for an Englishman.
A barn on Miss Winifred Mayer’s Keota farm known as the John Mayer homestead and run by Ed Hotle for 25 years burned Friday afternoon. Neighbors saved a nearby garage building but firetrucks from Keota could not reach the scene due to poor dirt roads. Loss included the barn, 1000 bushels of oats, farm machinery, and other contents, insured by the Washington County Farmers Mutual Insurance Association.
The Presbyterian choir presented The Sermon on the Mount cantata yesterday morning before an appreciative audience. Mrs. Henry Shields directed and played organ. Soloists included Ruth Miner Dixie Carter John Lloyd Hughes and Lucille Knox among others with a double quartet performing The Lord's Prayer and other selections. The choir was praised for its cohesive singing and strong solo and small group performances.

G L Roy Fetters announces candidacy for the Republican nomination to the county board of supervisors for the 1940 term. He is a county employee with road machinery experience, which supporters say would aid a board member. Harve Wilson, the incumbent, plans to seek re election.
Miss Enid P. Johnson from Swatow China will speak at the Baptist church Tuesday night at 7 30. She will describe her work in South China under the Woman's American Baptist Foreign Mission society and discuss the war conditions affecting Swatow.
James E. Cowger 69 of Washington was among five killed when a Burlington shop train collided with a fast freight near Burlington. He had worked in West Burlington for 12 to 15 years after operating a Washington blacksmith shop. Surviving relatives include Irene Clark of Washington and siblings in Washington Cedar Rapids and California. The wreck occurred as the shop train, just leaving a shop switch, was struck from behind by the freight with about 300 workers aboard.
Forrest Edwards of New town Missouri travels with his parents Mr and Mrs Hal Edwards to Washington for a weekend visit. They arrived Saturday evening and returned home yesterday after the trip.
Mr and Mrs John Stewart have returned home after a vacation in Florida.

Otha D. Wearin of Des Moines announces his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to the U S Senate. He positions as a militant Roosevelt booster seeking votes from Gillette supporters amid Gillette’s anti administration votes and farm bill lukewarm stance. Also in race are Guy M. Gillette and Eddyville’s Mrs. Ellsworth Richardson. Former congressman Wearin previously won three seats in Iowa elections.
Early voting on the Heights district bond issue for a new grade school began with only 175 ballots cast by noon. Officials expect turnout to rise in the afternoon as women and many men delay voting until later, with polls open until seven in the evening.
Fred Claussen, 71, died from burns after a blaze destroyed a cabin at Lake McBride where he lived. The fire occurred early today and its cause remains under investigation.
Mr and Mrs John Trojov sky and Mr and Mrs Hal Trojovsky with their son Junior, all of Norway Iowa, were guests of Mr and Mrs Victor Trojovsky at 364 South Second Street.
