Washington Birthday Awakens Hardyville
Miss Atworth, the new teacher in Hardyville, wins parents and neighbors with a patriotic Washington birthday program. Karl Schmidt, an immigrant boy, recites Mein Vaterland in German, prompting a village fundraiser for a school flag. The effort spurs town renewal as Schmidt, Dowling, and others pledge support and labor.
