Toll Now 86 Five Killed In Iowa Weekend Crashes
A Davenport area hospital reports four members of the Brabston family and a Crooked Creek resident among the dead and injured as Iowa’s weekend highway toll rose to five. Florence Brabston, 26, of Coal Valley Ill, was killed when her car collided with another four miles south of McCausland. Her husband James, 28, and their two sons, Douglas 8 and Ronnie 4, were injured. Elwin Holst 19, Princeton Iowa, driver of the other car, was hospitalized with head and chest injuries. Fred Gable 78, died after a February 10 accident near Keokuk. Ronald Koenig 18, Cedar Rapids, was killed east of Marion in a two car crash. Mrs Icel Thompson 73 and granddaughter Elaine Fagen 16, Des Moines, were killed when their car was struck by a Rock Island train in a Des Moines area.

Boston Strangler escape ends with capture at Walpole
Albert H. DeSalvo who claims to be the Boston Strangler escaped Bridgewater State Hospital hoping to be shot but later showed progress after recapture 32 hours later at Walpole State Prison. DES MOINES UP I Rep Maurice Van Nostrand R Avoca said the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce which has opposed a sales tax hike now supports a one cent per dollar increase to 3 percent This is seen as easing property taxes funding schools Van Nostrand warned that without higher state aid school taxes in Council Bluffs would rise from 129 mills to 135 this year and 142 mills next year He noted the chamber also backs a proportional school aid sharing plan based on need district levy and possibly taxpayer income The Nile River is 4145 miles long.

U S to release 175 million of frozen highway funds
