Mrs Mina Wertz and her daughter Mrs Robert Leeper were arrested on murder charges alongside Robert Leeper. The grand jury indicted all three for first degree murder claiming Robert fired the fatal shots Dec 27. The women, arrested near the Wertz home, await arraignment at 2 PM.
The House moved to take up the farm credit bill from the Senate Banking Committee with a vote expected within 24 hours. Chairman McFadden called the measure an honest effort to provide necessary credits for agriculture, incorporating Capper and Lenroot Anderson elements. The House also cleared three more measures from its calendar, including a Porter resolution urging President Harding to join other governments in reducing opium, coffee, and cocoa leaf production.
Early today a powder mine of Superior Fuel Company exploded in Russellton, near Pittsburgh, injuring two miners and damaging more than a hundred houses. A small crew at work survived unharmed.
Mrs. Ed Sullivan traveled to Davenport this morning to spend the day there, planning sightseeing and local events. She will return in the evening after visiting several downtown spots and meeting residents.
Professor Robert H Haig of Columbia University told the National Education Association meeting in Cleveland that public education funds rely on the failing general property tax. He urged revolutionary fiscal changes, including shifting away from intangible property taxes and adopting statewide income levies, citing New York Massachusetts and Wisconsin models. He argued education deserves broader collective funding following a century of public schooling.
Morrison led by George Morrison defeated Harry McCall’s squad 2157 to 2077 at the Commercial club alleys yesterday evening. Three substitutions occurred Falk for White Crooks for Hull and Brookhart for McCall.
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Blick visited the parental Robert Blick home in Wellston this morning. Mrs. M. L. Orris of Ainsworth is spending the day in Washington. Mrs. Harry Davis of West Chester is also spending today in Washington.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee decided not to take up President Harding's Hague Court proposal before this session ends. No vote was recorded but the panel favored postponement and asked for further investigation of authority to join the League of Nations court.
Washington February 27 The Arkansas Democrat Senator Caraway and another passenger exchanged blows after a confrontation on a street car. The man accused of jostling the senator allegedly used vile language before the scuffle. Descriptions note the passenger slapped the senator and Caraway struck back with his umbrella.
Harry Price, shot by a bandit last Saturday, died in a hospital early today in Wheeling West Virginia. Local authorities said the incident occurred after the assault and the suspect remains at large.
Judge John Hass opened the restarted Chicago night court with a choice for Earl Hunklem. The crewed drunkenness case ended with a $100 fine forgiven if he attends church every Sunday for six months.
In Clinton County Iowa on February 27 Henry Hansen thirty three, fleeing deputy sheriff with a shotgun in his hands, shot himself after a two mile chase through fields and mud. Earlier he had fired on Emil Johnson, a former partner, at the J E Hill home where Johnson had sought refuge. The pursuit followed a disputed revolver. Hansen's brother Chris reportedly had removed it.
Mrs. R D Page has returned home from Oskaloosa where she visited friends and relatives. Dr William S Wallace, previously in California, will resume his practice in Excelsior Springs Missouri on March first as consultant in the use of waters and baths. Office 207 South Marietta Street. Phone 163.
The Federal Council of Churches appeals to 150000 Protestant churches to urge government policy of international cooperation. It calls for active U S participation in European reparations, debts and armaments talks and supports Near East refugee relief and a renewed Lausanne approach.
The Interior Secretary announced withdrawal of twenty million acres in Alaska to create a new oil reserve. L. F. Henderson departed for Ottumwa to attend the Graham Stores managers convention. William Davis traveled from Watertown, Ohio to escort his sister Mrs. Leah Sweet back home.
Mrs Z Hill and baby Jane of Grinnell visit Mr Hill on business. Leona Juiz employed here goes to Keota for a visit. Nag wcox and daughter JB Lewcox from Keota spend time in Washington then return home.
The president nominates Postmaster General Work to be Secretary of the Interior, succeeding Albert Fall who retires March 4. Senator Harry S. New of Indiana will become Postmaster General, after declines cabinet offers to stay in the Senate. The moves were sent to the Senate for confirmation before the current session ends.
James R. Hodges faces manslaughter charges over the June 30 death of Mrs. Aaron Anderson after a crash near Scranton. Ten jurors were seated as Floyd E. Billings outlines the case with witness Lucile McMichael set to testify Hodges and McMichael were drinking and the car may have traveled seventy miles an hour. Mrs. Anderson died in the fire and her husband died a week later from injuries. Attorneys for Hodges are Haff and Behafer. Billings is aided by A W Milch. Mac Richards is visiting Washington on business. The notice also advertises sewing machines and supplies from Singer.
President Harding named Brigadier General Frank T. Hines to head the veterans bureau replacing retired Colonel Forbes. Hines will lead the agency as it continues to administer veteran benefits and services.
